My dad was wondering if anyone has tried these non-rifles slugs. Meaning they can be fired from a non-rifled shotgun barrel.

Has anyone had any bad or good expeinces with these?

I'm not positive, but wouldn't it be better to use rifled slugs in a non-rifled barrel. I think the rifling on the slug will compensate for not having rifling in the barrel.

I believe the rifling on Foster style slugs has been shown to impart very little 'spin' or extra stability, but that it allows some compression while passing through a tighter choke... and I'm not even sure you buy slugs that don't have some rifling on them now?

What you probably want to be asking is the difference between slugs for non-rifled barrels vs. slugs (saboted) for rifled barrels... I believe the rifled barrel with appropriate slugs can double the accurate range (i.e. from 50 to 100 yards). I'm still a newbie so hang on for a more experienced response.

Here's an article by Chuck Hawks that lays out some of the basics re shotgun slugs:

From my limited knowlege of slugs;

Rifled slugs (Foster or Brenekke type) are for smooth bore or non-rifled barrels (or rifled chokes).

Sabot style slugs are for rifled barrels or rifled choke tubes.

From what I've read and been told (I have not experienced it first hand) a sabot style in a smoothbore, will give you about 50 yards with reasonable accuracy. Beyond that, it goes downhill fast. I reason it like a football. In a spiral, it goes farther and more accurate, then a football thrown without a spiral.

If you are shooting an old smoothbore ,it most likely has a full choke and you have no choice but to use a foster type slug witch has rifling manufactuered on the slug.This is for spin and accurracy. best at 50 to 75 yrds. if you have replaceable chokes , most companies suggest the improved cylinder for the foster type slug. you can buy a flush rifleded choke or an extended rifled choke to shoot the saboted style slugs with much greater accuracy, out to 100 yrds. Most saboted slugs range form 1700fps to1900fps and the 3" mags up to 2000fps.Winchester makes a beautiful 1ounce partition gold slug in 2 3/4" for the 12 ga. I find the Federal foster slug best for any of the old smoothbores. Hope this helps a bit;)
