It seems like the 7.62 supply is dominated by Norc Chinese surplus which I understand is steel core.

Is it actually steel core? If so, how can us Canadians obtain non-steel core 7.62? Is Barnaul the only other choice?

Military surplus is steel core, non military is not.

Bring a magnet to the store if you are really concerned about it.

Norinco does make non military x39, I think I have some psp somewhere

Barnaul is lead core but good luck finding it now with all the Russian sanctions.

You can buy lots of brass cased stuff, not surplus, or cheap though.

The "magnet to the store" might not be conclusive since many 'euro-bullets' are "bi-metal jackets", where the jacket is 'mild' steel with a copper plated 'jacket'. A magnet will stick but it may not be 'steel-core'; and much of the 'steel-core' is also a mild steel, NOT "armour-piercing" per se. It's there 'cause soft steel is cheaper than lead. Lots of info online describing the differences, and defining which ammo has what components.

Hornady, federal, Winchester, PPU, MFS all make soft point or ballistic tip x39. Won’t be cheap or easy to find at the moment, it’s been a few years since I’ve seen the big boxes of Hornady SST’s anywhere.

Yowsers ! $26/box at Tenda - if you get enough for 'Free Shipping' still . . . pricey.
OP - is there a reason you're looking for Non-Surp - beyond cleaning corr primer stuff ?? A range that won't allow S-C ? That's why I went into detail about the variations, some places are fuddy about it.
BTW - has anyone just ground the tip off FMJ to test accuracy and expansion - and expansion of FMJ on it's own - I'll have to check YT for that . . . lotsa bubbas doin' strange stuff there. (look who's talkin' -:rolleyes: )

I think that has been tried multiple times - likely works fine, until the jacket is left behind in the barrel - I think FMJ have the lead core inserted from the rear - grinding the tip off, makes it into a jacketed tube - about nothing except friction holding that lead core in there. It is not the shot that sheds the core that is the problem - it is the next one, fired into a jacket still stuck in the barrel.

Not much lead in a steel core bullet.

Heed the warning above
