Noob at Moose... plz help

Last year was our first year successfully harvesting a Moose. I would recommend several sharp knives and sharpening tools is an absolute must. I would also recommend to have able bodies that are half decent in shape. Might mean doing some weights and cardio leading up to the hunting season. YouTube has tons of info on fieldressing or quartering Moose. Good luck!

Yup, git a can oh spinache the right size.
Eat the spinache and make a hole in the center of the can.
Tie a string in there and pull it through your fingers.
If you do it quite right, the spinache should be in yer system for
the work to follow.
Some on here can tell you the right size spinache can and the proper
rope to use for the mewsie grunt noise.

Biggest can you can buy. You need to eat a lot of spinach for the job of dealing with a dead moose.

OLFA knife with a full pack of replacement (HD black) blades, and a good bone saw.
Oh - and second the extra game bags - can never have too many!

Well now i'm getting anxious waiting to see what if any tags our group received in the draw, but regardless I've purchased a new Rifle and am looking at used Argos. We have full butchering and field dressing kits and will def pick up extra game bags before we go. I'm gonna spend the money on a good moose call as I just don't have the time to practice every day with a bark or can call. A few times a week and I can usually pick up the commercial grade calls for most game. I'm very confident in my shooting skills and have opted to go for a 270 Win chambered rifle and will be using Hornady superformance sst rounds. Custom turrets on a good Bushnell scope for the optics. My wife of course is bringing her Lee enfield longbranch with original irons..lol I hear 1500lb/ft energy is what is needed as a bare minimum for Moose and the Hornady's carry that almost to 500yards (1487lb/ft I believe) so I'll limit my shots out to 450m if I have a clear motionless target. Been watching all the youtube videos on field dressing and there really isn't much of a difference in the way they do it from what I've been doing for a decade on deer so that should be an easy transition. I pick up the rifle next week so I'll post some pics when I get it.. Very excited for this one. Stainless on grey laminate stock, fluted barrel and spiral fluted bolt with a match trigger.... Can't wait...

Shoot them as close to the trail as possible. The further you are from camp/your quad/your pickup, the bigger they are. The biggest moose are always standing in water when you see them.

A lot of good advice here.

Each moose i shot was a one shot kill. One hit the spine, the others were through the boileroom..

Only the spine hot dropped in his tracks. The others trotted off as if nothing had happened. I stayed put for a few minutes (5) and then headed out to pick up the trail. I was confident that the moose was well hit and that it would not go far.

Not one went as far as 100 yards. Some went 25 yards and dropped dead. Others went 50 yards and then lay down to ponder the problem... and died.

If you fire the shot and then start running, the moose will do the same - except he is 5 times faster. And they tend to run towards the nastiest bush they can see.

I would not consider hunting moose without my 4x4 ATV. A hunt camp like yours needs at least 2 ATVs, so one can recover the other if it breaks down.

I recall one time towing out a Honda ATV that had a moose dragging behind it. I was using a Suzuki that had a super low gear and a locked diff. I enjoyed it because the Honda owner had earlier assured me I had made a mistake in buying the Suzuki.

I carry a real good hunting knife and a back up folding knife, just in case.

I'm curious, do hunting groups in Ontario get their own exclusive area to hunt in, or can anyone hunt where they please within the zone listed on their permit?

Can someone quickly explain the draw stuff to me.. We applied on time as a group but from the looks of it we were unsuccesful for both bull and cow.. Does this mean our hunt is over and all my time and cash for equipment is wasted?

if you no one in your group got drawn, then no, all is not lost, you dont get to hunt them this year, thats all that means, now your prepared for next year, and the year after that....

Looking at the regs it vaguely states something that you get a calf tag if you are unsuccessful for bull or cow.. can someone confirm this? Away from the house for the weekend so I can't check the mail..

You will get a calf tag if you didn't get drawn for a cow/bull.

best of luck to you and hopefully you shoot your moose very close to a track.
dont go alone.
dont do what i did and plugged one in a swamp and then spent the next four hours with
frozen genitals.
