I've got the field strip down for the AR, but have 2 questions.

How do you disassemble mags for cleaning? I got a little sand in one of mine. They are C Products mags; do I have to bend the tabs holding the floor plate in place?

Also, how the hell do you get the handguards off? I see that the tapered retaining ring is spring loaded, but do you need 3 hands to hold it down and then remove the guards?

What cleaning do I need to do in the gas block/gas tube?

TIA.

The gas tube doesn't require cleaning, ever.

The handguards, just pull down on the slipring with one hand, and pull them off one at a time. Can be tight, but it will happen. Giving them a smack helps sometimes.

The bottom of the mags are removeable with a cartridge. It slides out one way only.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tips DT!

Just one other question: when I fire, the spring in the buffer tube makes a very audible SPROING sound. I'm sure it's normal, but is there any way to reduce or eliminate it? Some lube in there or something?

What type of AR is it that makes that spring sound. I don't recall ever hearing that, how ever, I have only played with 3 different brands.

Take out the buffer and action spring (hammer cocked, push down on the buffer retainer, slide out the works) and give the action spring a light spray of aerosol white lithium grease. A little of this stuff goes a long way.

The loose piece sound in the buffer is normal too, just FYI.
