New to the site, new to handgun shooting, lots of questions but hooked. My partner and I went to DVC on Friday and shot a few different guns and we had an absolute blast, now we are hooked. Can anyone recomend their favorite gun shops around vancouver/lower mainland area. We've been to two so far, one had great service the other wouldn't let us feel the guns in our hands (said it was against legislation) because we don't have our PAL but we plan on doing that next month.

Anyway, hi folks and thanks

Doug

I went to Wanstalls in Maple Ridge and Itallian Sporting Goods and both let me handle firearms without having my Pal. Who didn't let you handle them?

If you live in Maple Ridge you need to go talk to the guys at Wanstalls. The 2 owners, both of which are named Craig, are awesome guys and will help you with anything at all. I booked my PAL course through them and have purchased every gun and round of ammunition from them. Plus its a great environment to go and learn new things about firearms and the people who love them.

You could drive to Langley and go to Wholesale sports but that would be a waste of your time. It is staffed with apathetic and uneducated employees who couldn't care less, I was in there with a friend once and he picked up 3 boxes of .45 colt and not one person from the gun desk to the cash asked for a valid PAL. You can pick up some cheap targets or knick knacks but as far as reliable advice goes don't waste your time.

International shooting supply in Surrey is pretty decent too. I have only been once but the staff was friendly and knowledgeable and they had a decent variety of products.

I have not been to Reliable or Italian sporting goods yet but both have been around for a while and I would recommend checking out as any stores as you can. When it comes to picking something up I'd say support a local business and stick with Wanstalls

Welcome!

Yeah, Wanstalls is great. Always enjoy talking with them when I go in, though I haven't purchased any firearms from them yet, I do plan too. Hubs in abby is a great place too I find, I don't think they do handguns though. If you go in there when they aren't busy they can answer a lot of questions. I find Travis and John to be the more knowledgeable ones there, but they're all good people to talk too.

Wholesale is great if you know what your looking for, as long as your not looking for answers. It's basically the walmart of outdoor stores. Great prices and with everything you need with friendly, not so knowledgeable staff.

As for having to HAVE your PAL to handle the guns in store, as far the course and regulations are concerned, as long as you are under supervision of someone who possesses a valid PAL, you are aloud to handle a firearm. Everyone behind the counter should have one. I don't know what kind of legalities the store front is obligated to though, if there are any. I actually asked someone once showing me a gun for curiosity (even though I have my PAL) and all they said was "Store policy" or something like that.

I've been to a number of stores from Vancouver to 100 mile and always met with cluless staff hired on for minimum wage, arrogance, or treated as a lookie loo although I had just cashed a cheque with a couple grand burning my back pocket. Well wanstalls and the place in 100mile are the only places worthy of a big thumbs up. I go as far as to say I owe wanstalls staff a Christmas present for all the time they've spent addressing my curiosities and needs.
