Noob Lee Enfield question!

if they made a change to the number 4 mk 1, but didn't feel it was big enough of a change to warrant a new series number, they'd add a star. ie. internet explorer version 1.(02) (03 etc. ;) still version 1, but minor differences

Gotch ya!!!
Thank You, it's all clear now!

On LB and Savage No. 4's, they changed the bolt release, using a little cut out near the breech rather than the little plunger release near the rear sight on the English made rifles. That modification is denoted by the * on your receiver.

The * after a No4Mk1 denotes Savage or Longbranch manufacture

Not quite, but close. It denoted a different style of bolt release and a slight change to the underside of the rear receiver bridge.

Savage and LB both made No.4Mk1 (no star) models for a while ;)

AND, LB also made No4MkI's with no * at the beginning...

Just to confuse everybody!

(At least it's not an SMLEMkI***IP, or something really bizarre!)

They may have made a few, but the I* was not standard production in the UK. They certainly made the dies to mark the rifles; I have a '44 Maltby clearly marked No. 4 Mk. I*, although the body is a Mk. I. Have seen another Maltby and have heard of others similarly marked in the same serial range. Perhaps the wrong die was issued from the tool room.

Those little stars are so important...... but sometimes something happens and the stars get put on but the mods don't get made. I have a pair of SMLE Mark I*** rifles, both Navy, that are quite different. One is a 1904 London Mark I that was upgraded 3 times, the other a 1907 Enfield that started as a Mark I* and was upgraded twice. The Enfield still has the early-type sight and sight bed. Both rifles are properly N marked.

Wondering if anyone else has encountered such an animal?
