Hello everyone, I am looking to pick up a new hunting rifle. I am new to hunting im looking to spend $550 and under. I am currently looking at the Remington 783 7MM. Any suggestions would be very helpful wanting to hunt moose, elk and deer.

He's going to hunt mule deer, black tails, moose and maybe bears. With that in mind I would recommend looking on the EE for a quality 30-06. OP, you also need to get right with the fact that you may have a hard time getting a rifle and scope under $550. It's doable but it will take some careful looking. Beware of false economy. A cheap scope will lead to heartache in the end. You're well into hunting season now so there's no sense in rushing into anything. Take your time and remember...buy once, cry once.

I picked up a Rem 700 ADL in 270win a few years back for 450.00. (intended project rifle) Yeah, the bluing was rubbed quite a bit, the stock was surprisingly nice but it lacked sights. Bases and rings for that are easy to obtain and inexpensive, and a simple Weaver K series can be had for ~100.00... when funds later allow, the scope can be upgraded to something clearer though they are a decent old optic.

450.00
+100.00
+ 70.00 new rings/bases (or make do with an old and inexpensive Weaver style)
could = between 570 and 630 and exceed your requirements. But if time is an issue, you'll likely end up having to pay more. I was only looking for a future build platform when I found the rifle.

with that budget i would say accuracy on a budget is the idea
savage axis in 308 will run about 350.00 and then the rest
on the best scope you can find.
This rifle is dead accurate if you do your part also a savage stevens 200 if you can find one
cheers

7mm Rem Mag is a big round for a first rifle and really made for larger game. I would agree with others - a good .30-06 would serve you better over a wider range of game, is much cheaper to practice with, and they have been knocking over Elk and Moose for nearly a century. You can get used rifles in great shape and companies like Vortex make great glass for the dollar.
