Hello,

Just received my restricted pal today... took 65 days! Anyway I have been researching and looking away at these forms for some months now. Any advice on a first time handgun to buy? http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/details/13603/GSG-1911-22-LR-Standard-OD-Green.aspx

Looking for something basic to start with, something to take to the gun range with cheap ammo to start at least.

There is a ton of threads saying basically 22 cal Ruger MKII/III or Browning Buckmark.. take your pick everything else a very distant second

The GSG is good but the Ruger Mark III is better for about the same $$. I have the one with the Bull BBL and it is sweet, accurate gun. I have a GSG from a few years ago. It is nice since it looks like a real 1911 but I have lots of ammo specific issues. You will be happy with either or both!

Ruger MK111....Epps had a couple of them last week for $50.00 less than the SRP on the Ruger site....I got one !! Very accurate and way cheeper to shoot than my 9mm....Also I started shooting LEFT handed last week for the first time in 40 years and the MK111 is perfect for practice in both hands...Good luck

This was my first

and I haven't regretted it.

Colt Gold Cup 22....Top of the shelf stuff !! VERY nice to have..Stay with one of the top makes and you should be real happy !!

My problem is that I really like almost all guns...And want at least one of each.......25 down and 9,457 to go !!!!!

Ah so you went with a gsg? Good gun? Im in Ottawa... anyone been to Sail and checked out there selection?

Don't bother going to SAIL, they don't stock handguns as far as I know. Sportsaction does if you want to take a look at what they have.

not sure if you're sold on the .22 but my buddy did the same and (very) quickly tired of it. he ended up with a norc np-22 which, i have to admit, has been flawless and seems solid.

Oh really, I thought my friend told me Sail has handguns in the back, you have to ask to see them, could have been somewhere else? I did my hunting test at sports action, but frankly I hadn't done much research on the topic of handguns at the time... Ive been watching youtube reviews and lurking these forums, I feel a little more confident now. Still it seems almost like online sales are the way to go as far as prices and selection go. I'm going to the range next week to do a final safety class on handguns so Im hoping they have some of these there to try out. Thanks for the quick reply to all... seems like a pretty good forum!

Im not totally sold on getting a .22 it just seemed to make sense for a first handgun, its not the actual price of the handgun its really the price of the ammo... I wouldn't mind spending $1000 on a handgun (maybe not my first one tho) I have more of a problem spending huge amounts of money on ACP ammo when I'm just learning. Going through boxes of expensive ammo for a noob seems like a bad idea haha. Maybe once I actually get reasonable good and informed at the range with a .22 I'll step up to a "real" handgun.

My first handgun was a Beretta 92F I got in a trade. Shot a couple mags out of it and sold it because times were tough. About half a year later I got a Norc Commander in 45ACP and actually learned the basics of how to shoot on that. That said, I didn't get to where I was comfortable with saying "I know how to shoot a pistol" until I could make one ragged hole in the target at 10 m with my Glock.

Some people argue that it's best to start with a 22LR and go from there, but if you're using proper tecnique I don't see any reason why not to go with a centrefire. Plus, an all metal 9mm with light loads isn't much different than a 22LR for kick or muzzle climb. Using my favourite reload recipe and a Beretta 92FS I don't even see the muzzle rise on the pistol. YMMV.
