This is a question for the coyote hunters:

I have never been hunting, just paper punching. I would love to finally get around to it, and I like the idea of distance shooting coyotes.

My question: What is the season for these guys? What is the procedure? (as in, tags, acquiring tags or whatever it is that you need for these?)

I am aware I will need to do my hunter's ed course, but other than that, what do I need for these guys?

yup as said, depends on which Province and which area within.
More and more Provinces are relaxing reg's on these buggers though.
Open all year in my area, any caliber.
If you are getting into this fun sport,
take a visit to predatorhuntcanada.ca
Lots of guys from this site are also there.

In BC you need to have a license, there are generally set times depending on region, and sometimes even bag limits.

My Region:
COYOTE 5-1 to 5-15 Sept 1 - Mar 31/2010 NBL

I am in Ontario, my friends. I know we have some wacky laws here, so I need to look this up. Thanks for that link to predator hunt Canada website, I will be checking that out for sure. Thanks for the info!

Southern Ontario has no season or limits(no Sunday rifle/shotgun hunting). You can use hounds, bait or calls.

Good luck and give 'em hell!

As an eastern ontario resident I'm afraid to even google it as it will turn up dozens of outdated webpages and municipality bylaws. The city of ottawa's firearms discharge maps havn't been updated on their website since 2001, and I'm pretty sure there are housing complexes in the 'safe' areas to discharge.

Atleast I know what I'm going to be looking for tomorrow during work :p

LOL exactly... I live in the 613 as well... fun stuff! If I get my hunter's ed done soon enough, we should go do some predator control ;)

What about...Eastern Ontario? lol

I don't know the municipal bylaws in your area. In the areas where you can discharge a firearm, there are very few rules regarding coyote hunting. You'll need your small game licence and there may be a calibre restriction. That's likely the only restrictions that you may encounter. A look through the Ontario Hunting Regs, should give you the exact info that you need. If you can find some houndsmen who run coyotes in your area, ask if they'll let you join them. It's a blast running yotes with hounds!

Pick up a hard copy of the Ontario hunting regs at your local CTC or LeBaron (there's one in Ottawa, if that's close to you) and check out the rules and maps. They are complicated but it will be far more efficient for you than this thread.

I've hunted coyotes as far east as Cobourg area with success. If you're doing long-range shooting you'll likely want to approach farmers with livestock and they're more than likely to grant you permission to hunt their land so long as you present yourself well. A bottle of rye might help too :D

Check your municipal bylaws for rifle caliber restrictions but as far as the hunting regs go, you're free to use whatever you like. Good practice with your deer or moose gun if you hunt either of those during a rifle season.

Good luck!
