I see threads about people rebarreling to different calibers. What else is required when you do this? Do you need a different bolt/extractor to handle the different size cartridges? Are receivers/actions designed to use a variety of calibers and just different barrels are attached?

Wow, that's a lot of questions!!!:D

It depends on the circumstances. Many cartridges are in "families", with identical head sizes and similar lengths and contours. For example, consider cartridges ranging from .25-06 to .35 Whelen; usually only the barrel would need to be changed, and alterations to the action would be unnecessary. Many manufacturers produce receivers designed to function with a variety of cartridges. Others are machined to function with only a single cartridge, and require alterations to work with a different caliber.

More to the above, My change from the 38-40 to the 44-40, evne allowed me to use the same cases. I simply fireformed the old cases in the new chamber.
You need to do a 'little' research. Some conversions are quite complex, problematic, or impossible.
