Noob recoil question

I put 10X 12 guage 2 3/4" slugs through my 870 today and that thing kicks like a mule. My shoulder even hurts a bit. I was wondering how the recoil of a 12 guage compares to other firearms. Would it kick more than a Marlin 1895g 45/70 Govt?
 
try a #4 3" mag... kicks like a bugger.
I find the load really makes a difference on recoil. 2 3/4 arent bad.. its some of the 3" shells that bruise ya up.
 
I have fired many 2 3/4 magnum slugs through my defender 1300, and yes I usually get a painful shoulder. By comparison the 7.62x39 recoil is completely insignificant. The 308 recoil is noticeable but nowhere near the 12 gauge. I can fire the 308 all day with no problem. 20 slugs through the 12 gauge and my shoulder is sore for four days. :)
 
Are you using the stock recoil pad? If so it's junk, get a R3 pad. Also if the recoils to much maybe it's time for a gas semi?

HOWDY, Try installing a "DEAD MULE " in the stock to help control the kick.
Dead mule,= lead balls or shot put into the hole in the stock when you remove the recoil pad.
 
i just put about 10 slugs through my winny 120 with a pistol grip it aint that bad LOL
rubikahn try geetting a peice of steel plate in the same shape as your recoil pad put that on fire about a dozen rounds the put your recoil pad back on it will hit like a pellet gun afterwards LOL :D
 
A Knoxx SpecOps stock will cut the felt recoil in half, no foolin'. I put one om my 14" bbl. 870P a few days ago and now it is actually enjoyable to shoot slugs. Well worth the $159. The Shooting Edge (link at the top og this page) has a few of them in stock right now.
 
I have shot 3" buckshot and slugs as well as 2 3/4 and it doesn't kick too hard for me but it does kick. a Nice R3 pad would be nice
 
Well, all I've shot is a 22. Compared to that it kicks just a little :D . I've shot SMG's and pistols in vegas and FNC1's but nothing recently that compares with the shotgun.
 
I really haven't shot anything as tooth loosening as a 3" slug out of a short shotgun. Out of my Norc HP9-1 with houge 12" LOP stock, you have to be careful not to punch yourself in the face! :p LOL :D
 
I purchased an older 870 that I was going to rebuild, but RePete and I took it out to try it before we started any work. It shot well, but after about 8 slugs, 5 buckshot, and 10 field loads of birdshot I was beginning to feel it, and I felt it the next day also. I ended up selling it to RePete and I bought a 590 that I installed a Knoxx Spec Ops stock on. The only sore parts of my body after shooting it now is my arms from holding the fully loaded beast up, then again I am muscularly challenged :).

IMHO, you should have considered putting the spec-ops stock on the 870. The safety on the mossberg is tough to manipulate with the PG stock setup, while on an 870, it's actually easier than with the OEM stocks.
 
What's the choke in that thing? Some folks don't realise that you don't shoot slugs through guns that are choked. Besides kickin' up your shoulder, it'll blast the choke out, if you're lucky, or put a bulge in the barrel, if you aren't.

Suck it up butter cup...

Make sure you have the butt tight into your shoulder, pull it in. Grip firmly without trying to muscle your sights onto target. If you still need it, get a recoil pad or one of those fancy shooting jackets/vests

I figure a chihuahua(sp?) or other rodent type dog between my shoulder and butt would help things out!!:D
 
how is a rodent stuck between your shoulder and your butt gonna doing anything but scratch your backside up on recoiling LOL
