Hello I have a few questions about barrel length. I would like to make a super short 870 for packing around in the bush. ( similar to the suberu super shorty but a bit longer, kinda like the Remington 870 breacher) and I was wondering on the barrel length because I would like to keep it unrestricted and I believed that 18.5 inches was the shortest barrel that you could have unrestricted. So does that mean that these 12.5 inch barrels are registered as restricted or am I confused?
Thank you

Factory barrels under the 18.5" length are Non-Restricted......if you yourself cuts down a barrel below the 18.5" mark, is where you will run into trouble. I hope that clears it up for you!

You also have to respect the Overall length guidelines as well, 26" OAL must be maintained or longer!

Don't take my word on it, but my understanding is that if you "alter" (cut) a shotgun barrel to less than 18.5 inches it's illegal, but you can install a short barrel that you've purchased, and as long as the overall length is over 26.5 inches you're still non-restricted. So I'm sure with a Dlask 8.5 inch barrel and pistol grip you'd be restricted, but apparently with the full stock on it it's still non-restricted.

I'm sure someone else will chime in to confirm or correct me. :D

Yup, I've got a 6.5 " Dlask and as long as the oal is adhered to it's nonrestricted. With a pistol grip, or any stock that takes it below the prescribed oal makes it restricted.

X2 with the above info, I know it does not make a whole lot of sense, but at least the loop hole was left allowing us to buy short barrels.

Like said above, pistol grips are ok, BUT the over all length (OAL) has to remain over 26". This might work out with a 18.5" barrel, but i dont know for sure.

I think its 18" not 18.5" when dealing with cutting down a barrel on a pump, aint it? I think most guys talk about 18.5" because of semi auto's and because they rather have the extra .5" in the event a cop cant work a tape measure.

And for future reference, semi auto's have to remain over the 18.5" mark.

Non-restricted firearms are ordinary rifles and shotguns, other than those referred to below.

Restricted firearms include:

* handguns that are not prohibited;
* semi-automatic, centre-fire rifles and shotguns with a barrel shorter than 470 mm (about 18.5 inches);
* rifles and shotguns that can be fired when their overall length has been reduced by folding, telescoping or other means to less than 660 mm (about 26 inches); and
* firearms restricted by Criminal Code Regulations.

Prohibited firearms include :

* handguns with a barrel length of 105 mm (about 4.14 inches) or less and handguns that discharge .25 or .32 calibre ammunition, except for a few specific ones used in International Shooting Union competitions;
* rifles and shotguns that have been altered by sawing or other means so that their barrel length is less than 457 mm (about 18 inches) or their overall length is less than 660 mm (about 26 inches);
* full automatics;
* converted automatics, namely full automatics that have been altered so that they fire only one projectile when the trigger is squeezed; and
* firearms prohibited by Criminal Code Regulations.
