I've seen the Norinco 1911 being used in IPSC Classic, and it's probably a great starter gun there because you learn all about clearing misfeeds and dealing with all the other stupid things that go wrong. If you get serious about competition, though, you do really want something that runs flawlessly and lets you fly rather than too-often making you think about what's wrong with the gun again. If you started with the perfect gun you'd never have learned what all the wee parts of a 1911 are supposed to be doing!

Norcs are good guns. I used an NP29 for a couple years. I shot my novice ipsc match with it too. It worked great and it was a lot of fun.
I would look for an sti Spartan or similar. A cheap Norco after a lot of work is still a cheap Norco. There are other cheaper models out there that come with all the doodads that you will pay to add to the norc.
I used a norc 45 that I won for a season in ipso, then bought a Trojan and a sentry in 40. Today I'd look into a Bul 9mm.
