Norc 1911 vs Tokarev 9mm

I have a Norc 45 and it is a joy to shoot. There is nothing in the world like a 1911 in your hand. Norc's are pretty good for the money, too. That said, I suggest you get mom to shoot a few different guns and let her decide. A gun is a very personal choice.

Tokarev is not really a good pistol to build confidence.
Precision is average at best.

All Norc/DA 1911 have good reviews, are well made and pretty accurate for the price.
In fact, 1911's are probably one of the best guns imported by Norinco.
Alot of Norinco marked stuff is crap but these aren't.
One of my friend own a Norc 1911 for a couple of years now and he's happy with it.
I fired a few mags in his Norc and it was great.

I had 2 Ruskie-Tokies and these are, IMO, mostly collectors items.

I can imagine the Polish are a little better.
Zastava Tokarevs seems well made but i never had a chance to tried those 2.

Personally neither are great choices IMHO. I have several Norincos in 45acp and like them but they really are not guns I would recommend to a new shooter.

For the small additional costs, look at a used M&P in 9MM. I see them on the EE used at around $500. The gun is simple to shoot and with the medium and small grips likely much easier for your mom to get a good grip on the gun. A Glock 17 would be another good used pistol to look at if you can find one at around the same price point. Do not ignore a used Tanfoglo if you see one or a CZ 75B used.

A couple of hundred dollars may seem like a lot but both guns I mentioned will last her a lifetime and, if she finds shooting is not for her, both models will sell quickly on the exchange for about what she paid for them.

If you just have to buy one or the other the Norc 1911 would be the best of two mentioned. That is not any kind of recommendation just putting one less than stellar choice ahead of the other less than stellar choice.

The problem with the cheap guns is that they typically need some tuning and tinkering to work well as a target shooting pistol. So my suggestion is to stop being cheap and save up more and buy a better known "out of the box" performer than either the Norc 1911 or the Tokarev.

I bought a couple of the cheap 9mm Tokarevs back when they were only $99 from Canada Ammo. The idea being to tinker with them to learn some gunsmithing. As delivered both had horridly heavy trigger pulls. They left my ownership with pretty nice trigger pulls but it took a lot of playing around.

The only Norc 1911 I've bought needs serious tinkering to become a good gun. Oh sure, it shoots rather well. But the slide serrations could flay a slab of fish into sushi they are so sharp. And the thumb safety is likely to amputate the thumb of the shooter it's so sharp. And there's some other little things too. SO it's not a gun I feel is truly good as a target shooter right out of the box.

You'd be worlds ahead to save up some more and buy a gun which is more satisfying to use as it come out of the box.

I see some people saying get a Sigp226 norc copy, that will be too big for her hands unless she has hands the size of a man weighing about 180-190lbs. I own a sig, norc 1911, have held tt33, had a sig mosquito (i would recommend that for her, its smaller but only in 22lr). I would be extremely confident with a norc 1911. I have used several norc guns and no problems other than sometimes a little fitting on upgraded parts. They work just fine from the factory though, and quality has actually gotten quite good in recent years. You really have nothing to worry about buying one of them. After that there are so many polymer 9mm guns out there that would have a similar grip size to a glock she really has unlimited choice. Norc will likely just be the very cheapest one.

I have the Toks in both calibers, and the Norc 1911s in 4 calibers.

My suggestion would be the Norc 1911 in 9mm. It is an heavy gun, so recoil is minimal.

The Norc might need a trigger job. After that it is a great pistol.

Get a Tokarev clone. Ironically, Norinco makes a Tokarev clone. If you want the best fit and finish in that price range in a 9mm, I would say that the Star model B beats out all others. The Star is a Spanish 1911 clone in 9mm. Used by their military and police the fit and finish is far better than any Norinco. Every part of the pistol, including the underside of the slide have been polished. I can not see any machine marks on mine... just exceptional. I bought mine for $350. Norinco's goes bang but a heck of a lot of machining marks.

Appreciate all the feedback guys. After handling the Norc 1911 and a few others in store, and a couple range sessions with my small collection and a few others including a friend's 1911, I ended up transferring her one of mine, a G17. It's the one she shot best and felt most comfortable with.

Having no experience or even interest in 1911's before starting out on this search for a budget first pistol for her, I seem to have developed a bit of a thing for them and will be watching the EE for a nice used Norc or SAM 1911 in 9mm for myself in the near future :)
