If i guy wanted to have his norc finished by arma-coat or something what do they do with the serial number ? Tape it off ? All my other ar's have had the number stamped or plated, never just painted on.

What do you have that has a painted on serial number?

Edit - I see what you are talking about. I just went and looked at my CQ-A and it is some kind of coating on the surface of the finish. I thought it was engraved through the finish, but that is not the case.

You can re-stamp or engrave the serial number in as long as you don't change it and that is legal.

I dont plan on coating it but it just seemed odd that it was just a paint like finish. Even if it gets scratched up seems sorta silly. I see under the front post there are some digits of the serial number stamped.

I am surprised that is considered acceptable by the powers that be. I was under the impression that the regs demanded a stamped or engraved serial number. Apparently not.

I ordered a 10.5 and recieved a 14.5 so i was worried maybe i got a rifle with wrong paperwork thats the only reason i really looked at the serial number. Norcs dont have the best finish so a guy would either want to fix it, OR i bought a cheap axis just so it could be my beater gun that i dont mind if it gets dirty and scratched up.

tape the serial part and paint? I know it looks bad but that's probably the only way.

The law allows for the restamping or engraving of an existing serial number, so the receiver could be re-marked after refinishing it if required.

write it down paint over it then take the lower to your local laser engraver....

I want to be the one to call for an ATT for that job, should be a good time. ;)

Could it be laser etching? (I don't mean laser engraved or stamped either)

I have seen laser etching on things before that you could very easily mistake for paint like finish...
