Norc Flash Hider !

Before you start drilling the welds try tapping off the flash hider first. Mine was welded but madam chinee welder must have been napping - the weld marks were there but the welds didnt take ! Last batch of norcs - 2007 on the receiver. Pulled it off without a punch !

I'm back.Boy that was easy.All I had to work with was a little stub of the barrel.I threaded it for a 3/8NC bolt.Undid the sight set screw and the castle nut set screw then took em out.Tapped off the sight, loosened off the castle nut,put the flashhider between a couple of pieces of wood in the vise,after i screwed a bolt in the barrel stub.With the flash hider pointing up I then tapped on the bolt with a dift that fit loose down the hider and out it came.Of course you have too loosen the castle nut as you go. Once it was all apart and I cleaned off all the grit that seems to be in every threaded part of the M-14s,I saw that the weld of only one hole had barely touch the barrel. Well just finished doing #2.What a breeze.This one on a not chopped rifle.So it came off nice and easy,I then flipped my gas lock,it closed by hand to about the 430,5 oclock position.Tapped it the rest of the way with the rubber hammer.Boy is that baby nice and snug now.Before it would close to the 730,8 oclock position,now it rings and rings.Thanks again Chopper 1.Never bothered trying before because of all the horror stories and seeing what had to be done on the Hungry DVD,plus I don't own a drill press.I'm a happy guy.Later
 
You guys are lucky. Tried pounding on mine over and over. Even tried drilling out the welds but it was burning out bits. In the end we had to cut the damn thing off so now I have a rifle with a new 18.5" barrel and no front sight.
 
Both of mine were from the last batch brought in by Marstar.How about yours Leg?My second rifle had the weld touching the barrel on both spots but not much penetration,Used a brass drift and off it came.But then being a millwright I'm used to using the BFH

LOL ! I bought a bunch of expensive new drills and diamond dremel grinders in anticipation of a tough job based on all the horror stories - then as I started, just before drilling and grinding I said whay the hell , what if , and started tapping lightly - SERRRRRPRIZE SERRRRRPRIZE !

"...the welds didnt take..." Geez, it's hard to find reliable slave labour these days.
"...just before drilling and grinding..." Always try the simple stuff first.
 
With the First Norc I bought, the Flash Suppressor came off with couple good whacks................The Second one, I had to drill out the welds then give it a few (quite a few) good whacks............the third just had the two holes at the bottom of the FS and hadn't been welded!!!!:D

I have seen a few Norcs with the holes in the bottom of the FS and not welded................it seemed to be hit or miss on the weld quality (or even if it was welded)..............

One of mine so far seems to have been welded on expertly; whaled away on it for some time with no success. Which is too bad, because the flash hider itself is really badly machined and I have the front sight way over left and the rear aperture way over right...
 
Mine was from the first batch that Marstar brought in. Picked up a G.I. castle nut before the barrel swap so I could reuse the flash hider. Hell, I even bought a couple of barrel stubs hoping to salvage the flash suppressors, no dice so far.

If anyone is looking to get rid of their flash hider then please let me know. Just don't have the coin to start looking for real USGI.
 
I remember my M14 from one of the first batches. Couldn't figure out why it was shooting all over the place. Turns out the flash hidder was flopping away on the end. No where even close to tight.
Skipped over the boarder to a gun show and picked up a NIW GI flash hider for $35.
Ahhh, the good ole days.

Sorry to highjack and for the "newbie question", but why are most of you removing the Norinco FS?

In most cases I would guess it is either because the barrel is being shortened, or because they are unhappy with the fit of the gas ring...generally if you have a poor lockup on the gas ring, you can flip it around and it will fit great. But, you can't take the thing off if the flash hider is still welded in place!

Of course they could also be swapping in USCG muzzle brakes or GI hiders or what have you.
 
every norc i've met that had a loose gas assembly...... was fixed by first removing the flash hider and as Misanthropist states, flipping over the gas lock and installing it again has in 99.9 % of the time, solved the loose gas system issue without wasting time trying to mess around with shims..

What exactly does the loose gas assembly result in and how do you reattach the FS once you take it off?

Again, sorry to high-jack, just very interested.
 
in any rifle , vibrations caused by loose fitting parts WILL affect repeatable accuracy.... the m14 is not immune to this.
tightening the gas assembly is one of the first steps to accurizing the m14 action. next would be timeing the oprod/oprod guide so it is true with the gas piston.

anyhow... the flash hider..... once it has been removed the first time, a careful clean up of the spot welds with a dremel and the flash hide should be able to slide back on and is fastened the same way it was before it was removed..... just without the useless welds.
these welds were originally installed as per U.S. import specification back several years ago and are NOT required for safe function.
