Hey Guys, just got my new chinese made M-14 in the mail today. Unpacked it, and by golly, I have some cleanig to do. The grease I was expecting. The white mold tendrils in the wood of the stock, I was not. Is this normal? It looks like moldy bread.

I would hazard a guess it is the funky Chinese grease/anti-rust gunk. A through degreasing and proper lube should fix it right up.

Katana had a stock like that, it was really kinda spooky to see that much mold in the barrel channel of his stock I'm not sure what his remedy was though. Myself, I'd throw it out and get one of these :D :D

but seriously, don't mess with what might be mold ...... I would put it through a cycle in the dishwasher on it's longest setting, dry cycle included. This is the well prcticed method of stripping the chu wood stock of it's chinese mystery finish. An application of tung oil has worked wonders on other cgn'ers chinese stocks. although the chinese stocks are known to be very soft, and this is the reason many guys ditch em for other options, I have seen a few now that cleaned up real nice with some cool looking grain to them.

Your not the only person to have this mold on your stock. Mine that came today also had it. I disassembled it and proceeded to soak & wipe the stock with methyl hydrate. Once the stock is dry I am going to sand it then paint it with diamond coat extior spray from Varithane. It will turn this soft wood in to something as hard as nails. As I am a painter by trade this is quite easy to do. All the materials from Sherman Williams.

sherman williams has some nice products. I've been having them order me in a matte clear epoxy "paint" and man them folks are good to deal with.

now, some may find what i'm gonna say a lil silly but whatever.
I , among other things, work at the ports here in b.c. , we handle a lot of dunnage (hard wood blocks) that seperate cargo. Often these blocks are moldy as hell with this freaky mold. We are instructed not to handle it when we find it and it is all inspected and disposed of by environment canada. Each giant metal bin of it must be covered the second it leaves the ship.

Foreign, unkown molds can be extremely hazardous to your health. Often injested by breathing spores, hand/mouth contact ect. I would be very wary about handling any such mold, even if it's found in the stock of an m14 hehehe. wear gloves and clean it well. I like the methyl hydrate idea mentioned above..... good one.

Mine just came in today as well; must be a BC thing? I had some white stuff just under the trigger assembly also:

So I gave them a bath!

Satain, I'd like to see how your stocks turn out. One of mine has a fibreglass stock ready for painting, but the other may remain stock. Is the methyl hydrate and diamond coat expensive? Maybe I'll do both M14 stocks and the SKS and make it a weekend project.

Mould

I wouldnt worry too much about it its probably just lead mould, cant be that bad for ya,cant be that bad for ya.Where was I ???

The last thing I'd do is put some unknown moldish material in the dishwasher--you don't know if any of the stuff will be absorbed by your dishwasher's lining or hoses. Yeah, probably it'd all rinse out but you'd have no way of knowing.

None on mine, but the butt plate doesn't close and I can get the cleaning kit out. Can't wait to get that USGI fiberglass stock that I bought on the EE...

Wow, that wood is soft... never seen something like that before

Did anyone found out if the flashhider is welded ?

Now if only I could find some complete buttplate assembly here in Canada... I'm not a big fan of the 25$ export fee than numrich now has...

Yeah, 45APCKING is right. Mine was like that too.

I used LOTS of "Simple Green" to clean it up. It made an improvment but it never really got ride of it all. Deosn't seem to be coming back, but I'll check it and update you all.

HIJACK ALERT:

I'd like to try that dishwasher thingy but I'm worried that it might mess up the wood in the long run. Any body done it years ago that could give me a progress report???
