Norc M-14 White Mold on Stock?/Arrived with Mold. (Threads combined)

Just checked out the stock of one that I bought back in the summer(stock not on the rifle, but in the stock closet)I cleaned the white fuz (mold) off when I first received it and then again in October and "its back". All I did was wipe it off before now I guess I'm gonna have to pour some rubbing alcohol on it to KILL it.

Now..., I'm interested in how to permanently get rid of the white mold... It did wipe off quite easy... Maybe a bathroom mold spray?

Anybody???

Cheers
Jay

It's very important to know whether it's mould or fungus. Mould is no big deal, grows fast and on the surface, and is generally very easy to kill. fungus grows very deep, much slower, hard to kill, and is tenacious.

Either way, people here shouldn't be putting that crap in their dishwashers!

At least not ones they use to wash food plates and cups.

Use some common sense guys. I don't know about you, but potentially toxic chemicals and/or fungus would not make its way into my dishwasher.

Boys, break clean or naptha works like a charm. Had a little on mine when I got it. Never came back, but then again both of mine now have USGI syn on them now. Checked both of the stocks in the garage (chu wood) the white stuff never came back. Buy some break clean, or naptha at your local cambodian tire. It dries out the wood and makes it easier to apply primer and paint.

Tyler, my buddy washes both of his glocks in the dishwasher and has never had a problem. I also washed my muzzlloader in mine. Man it did an outstanding job on my smoke pole!!! We just run an empty load after washing the guns. No soap just water and a hot dry cycle.

I would trust Austrian tenifer over chinese fungus any day of the week :)

I bought some ZEP Oven Cleaner, and I'm going to chemicalize that f'in mold/fungus/prions. Then a light sanding and Tung oil is the plan. I'll see if I can post pics.

I just cleaned mine in the sink. Used a plastic abrasive pad and Gojo hand cleaner to wash all the crap off. Seemed like a lot of dirt came off, too. Then I washed the stock off with Javex bleach. This kills mold.

The stock is now air drying beside me, as I type. Coming out more brown than black. It now needs an oil finish of some kind.

The wood seems very light. Must be a softwood. I think I will put it in a USGI fibregals stock.

I hit mine with Oven Cleaner, then boiling water, then Oven Cleaner, soaked for 20 minutes, then boiling water. Now they are on the extra hot "pots and pans" cycle in the dishwasher. 94 minutes of hellfire and detergenty goodness.

I will sand and Tung oil them tommorrow.

I will replace one with either walnut or synthetic if I build it up as an M-21 configuration. The other one is getting liberally oiled and vacuum sealed for either a rainy day or to trade for a Remington 700 at some point in the future.

all the steel was heavily oiled, and I scrubbed the hell out of it with detergent and boiling water in the sink. Lightly oiled with Hoppes, and they are looking pretty good.

Overall, I am pleased for the price. Although the jury is still out till I see what happens with these stocks. If they don't come out clean and at least serviceable, I am going to be pissed.

Mine arrived today, just in time for Christmas.
It was covered with this white stuff. Is this really mold or some chinese grease residue?

Can be seen here a bit.

Wiped it off and it looked a better but it needs a serious wash.

Its mold or fungus. and Mine looked like old man winter came all over it...

Although after a thorough stripping and dishwasher wash, it looks not half bad. Like an anemic blonde particle board made out of old apple cores and used chinese newspaper.

I thought it was some kind of spray on wax or something...

I hope you are right, I handled it with my bare hands as I was too eager to touch my M14. Now I regret I did it with my bare hands....did anyone perform any chemical analasis of this stuff. If it is getting worse for some people then it must be mould. How come metal parts were not covered with it? Mould........

Fooling with the newbies

Mine had the white powder on it and I just wiped it off with a rag with the excess oil.

It now looks and operates fine. I used OTIS CLP that I use on all my guns to clean, lubricate and preserve the metal.

I don't see what all the fuss is about.

You guys are acting like the guns came from Mars or something. So far it seems like any other new gun I've purchased. It was soaked in normal gun oil, not grease, pretty standard stuff. The wood seems solid and looks fine. Everything seems tight and well fitted.

The trigger is good with a nice clean break; not too heavy or light.

The bore is nice and bright, and cleaning it was routine.

There seems to be some sort of running joke on this site to try and get the newbies to do all sorts of crazy things like use dishwashers on their guns and panic about a little white dust on the guns.

Why are you screwing with the newbies? Shouldn't this site be trying to help and encourage new shooters not have them doing all sorts of ridiculus things to their guns?

This is different this time. If this was some kind of powder, it would be all over the gun, metal parts and all but this white stuff is only found on wood stock and is a bit slimy when you run a rag through it....gotta be mould and if it is mould, then it is toxic. I am a newbie myself, this is my first M14 (got it yesterday) and you can see the white stuff on my M14 in the pictures a couple of posts above. Plus the smell isn't great....smells like some old rotten wood in combination with oil.....it could very well be me but others express the same kind of concern. I want to keep the stock but I am not sure I should. The metal parts are nice and clean and just too well oiled which was a pleasant surprise but the stock....the stock is a completely different matter.
