Norc M14 Ammo question

Got a question: I ran into a couple of old boxes of ammo,one is marked:
CIL DOMINION 308 WINCHESTER 180 GR KKSP
the other is marked:
WESTERN SUPERX SILVERTIP 200 GR 308 winchester
Anyone know if these would be okay to put through my Norc M14???
 
if they are 308 winch they can go in one side and out the other. if your just trying to make noise they'll work fine. otherwise stick with a lower gr. 168 or 155. I've shot 20 year old .308 through mine. do keep in mind they that are going to have very different points of impact so I wouldn't go to a match with those rounds.... :)
 
If it's .308 it will go bang, but really anything over 168 grans is not good for your rifle. 200 grain silvertips must be an old box, that's sort of cool to see. Why not save those two boxes for a bolt rifle or trade them to someone for a couple of boxes of 150's or 165's. You should get a little extra for those 200 grain silvertips too...
 
Yeah, I got both boxes at a gunshow in Perth, Ontario back in April for 12 dollars for both.Ive never seen the silvertips before, both boxes are definitely old.What is it thats so bad about the heavier bullets on the M14, anyway??
 
Hard on your op rod and some other parts. M14 wasn't designed for the pressures from heavier bullets. I've heard the odd box won't hurt but...why risk your fine rifle. I'd still say trade them to someone with a bolt, and see if you can get a box of premium ammo (like some 165 grain Winchester ballistic silvertips) for those 200 grain silvertips. Your M14 will love those much better and they'll hit way harder at longer range in case you hunt...
 
The M-14 is designed to fire 153 grain bullets. Anything heavier than that will "batter" the action, and may cause problems.
Specifically, it might bend the operating rod, and cause a loss of accuracy.

i'd seriously re-consider using either- the winchester stuff is roughly 25 grains over the the so-called top end of the m14, ( the target stuff with modified rifles is about 175) - although the VERY ODD BOX of 180 won't hurt- considered is about 165 for hunting, 168 for target- but the 200 is COMPLETELY OUT OF THE QUESTION-
as for the cil,it's got to be at least vintage 1980 OR EARLIER, WHILE ALSO OVER THE TOP, i would also be somewhat suspect in it's ability to boom
in short,neither is suitable- 308 in suitable weight ( 165-168 or lighter) is readily availabe, so why risk it
i fired some of that 200 grain stuff in my savage 99 and found over pressure problems( backed out primers, blackened ends ) all over the place- i also suspect it was too heavy for the 1/12 twist- BAD NEWS ALL OVER
