I just bought at m14 shorty and am not a big fan of the front sight, and how tall it is, thought maybe it was wrong, but read on prev thread this is the way it is supposed to be. looking to change it out possibly, just wondering on what everyone thoughts are, possible upgrade to a usgi or other, or try to file the original one down.

It is tall for a reason if you file it down or change it your rounds will impact too high because of the short barrel. :)

Supposed to be that way to compensate for the barrel being shorter. Like above if you file it you sights will be all out of wack.

A gas lock sight should work the same regardless of barrel length.

Not quite ;)
Smith enterprise makes 2 versions of their gas lock sights, one for 22" barrels and a higher one for 18" barrels. With a higher sight base that is.

When moving the front sight back from it's original position on a 22" barrel, it requires a significantly higher sight base. On the current 18.5" chinese rifles, a standard flash hider was used, requiring the front blade to be made higher, as seen on current models. To correct the issue, a flash hider with a higher sight base would have been optimal, and would afford use of the standard front sight.

I replaced my factory stupidly tall site with a USGI one and there was enough room to turn the rear site down farther to get point of aim at 100. after i was sure of this i put the original in the mill and cut it to the correct hight. much happyer now

The front sight made for a 16" barrelled SAI Socom just might be what you guys are wanting .... Hint hint ;)
I also handed off the plans for a new gas cylinder with the front sight base attached to the front ring and set for 18.5" barrels. The company that has the drawings is proceeding but I can't say much here.

the front sight fro the Springfield 18" scout is what you need.
same overall height as the Norinco, plus N.M. width so sight picture
is the same as the 22".
part# AA0510

Where can you find something like that? I just bought my first m14 VIA a norc shorty that should be here this week, and from what I've read, the iron sites should be replaced right away. I cant find it on brownells, any recommendations?

Thanks

I don't really follow why this should be necessary, isn't the distance between the rear sight and the gas lock the same on the 22" and 18.5" barrels?

The distance between the sights on the 18.5" is less than on the 22".

Obviously the flash-hider sight mount is closer to the rear sight on an 18.5" barrel than on a 22" one, but are you saying the gas lock is closer to the rear sight too? I'm trying to understand why a gas-lock front sight would need to be higher on a shorty.

No the gas lock location is the same.
Moving the sight back means raising the height of the sight itself. More so on a shorter barrel. To be clearer, a gas lock sight for a 22" barrel would have a slightly lower blade than one made for a 18.5". It's kinda simple physics and understanding trajectory.
