I recently picked up a norinco m-305 for a song, is there anywhere that I can find the production year from the serial number ?, the number starts with 2009, but I don't know if that's coincidence or actual year. thanks and cheers

You are correct, the serial starts with the year of production.
If you really want to dig deep, a gentleman named "Different" would be able to tell you what year your receiver was made.
You would be surprised at how much older the receiver is than the rest of the rifle.
I think you can find him in the stickies still.
Just PM him the number on the receiver....He has a hell of a database for the 305 and variants.

my 2009 m305 is one of the best and most accurate I've seen. I'm just about to drop it into a reinforced USGI fibreglass stock, she's only gonna get better!
The serial numbers don't have bugger all to do with production or manufacture years.
China to the best of the collective m14 world knowledge, has not manufactured new rifles since the early 90's
The serial numbers on rifles imported 2009 and newer denote export year. Previous to 09 , the serial number did not include import year.
Import year markings became a regular thing somewhere between 2005 and 2007 and were typically milled on right side of rear
Manufacture date and location can be determined more by the numbers that are under the stock line on lefy side of receiver. Not visible unless stock is removed.

If a person does a Google search for "Norinco M14 Serial Number Database" you will find Differents posts in various forums, talking about import and manufacture dates, he is a very knowledgeable fellow.
My Marstar M14 s/n 008887, stamped 2007 with 4 3 20 2 24 on the left side below the stock line was manufactured in March 1994 as far as I can figure out by Differents posts.
4 is the year, 3 is the month, no idea what the other numbers mean, but Different does
