Norc M305 ok for hunting?

if you are consistent 2in grouping at 100m i see no reason to ask a question about the gun itself, considering the 'boiler room' size of kill area on an average large game

i didnt take your question half seriously, hence my first response, also half serious, yet plenty of people took it to their heart :) well, trolling is not my best side and even in person many take me too seriously

i own and shot couple or few norcs and i have no issue with their abilities. its the practice in the end
 
My brother shot a deer last year with a bone stock one. 168 grain Hornady handloads I think, they were old ones from my Grampa. About 50 yards. Frontal shot, bullet went in the chest, through the heart, hit the ribs and exited, then entered the rear right leg, where we found the bullet.

You'd be wrong. I still use an M14 for my winter wolf hunting and there isn't a better tool I've found. They are a good rifle, though I'm not a fan of the Chinese ones, and will do anything any hunter asks under the majority of conditions. My first choice as a big game rifle? No. But if he already owns it, he's at zero disadvantage in most hunting using it. Lets not forget your bolt action wasn't designed with hunting in mind either. No guns were initially.

and many responses seem to refer to the ability of the .308, which nobody is really rejecting as a hunting round to begin with.


I think the m305 will work fine, its just not my first choice for a hunting rifle because its clunky and makes more metallic noise than needed when sitting quietly in a stand or walking through the bush. It makes a great truck gun, though.

One of these days I'm thinking to order up a Boyds wood stock to solve the noise problem. Certainly make it look nicerif nothing else. Black plastic rifles just don't have the same appeal as a nice piece of oak.
 
No problem taking out a couple of elk with my m305 shortie. One was a bang flop, the bullet damage was devastating. Heck within appropriate range and placement I have taken them with a 30/30 lever( because that's all I had). They are stout animals no doubt but clearly not armour plated.
 
I just recently got a shorty and a full length - I'v seen some nicely tuned M305's. Find a load that works and there is no reason it can't do very well out to a few hundred yards - or so I think. Loved the pics guys posted.

Since you've come here and asked the question, I have to assume you haven't spent a lot of time shooting your m305...but there is a remedy for this (potential) problem! :)
You still have over a month to get as much ammo (hunting & plinking) as you can afford to buy and make time to shoot, and hit the range as much as possible with your rifle setup exactly as you intend to hunt with it.


If you are simply inquiring from a ballistic standpoint, I vote .308 for the North American do-all cartridge! :D

I've carried my M305 for 3x deer seasons but never fired a shot. Popped my cherry last season with a Rem700 (.308), and intend to try and christen my M305 again this year early in the season, then switch to the 700 if time is running out and I still have my tag.

Make sure to have a sling with you if you hunt on the move.

I've heard that an m305 will actually shoot down a bear piloted helicopter while in space. Plus it has the shoulder thing that goes up
 
Hunt deer with your M305? Heck, yes! Our gang hunts mostly by doing small drives in the typical mixed farm land/rugged ridges and hardwood bush of SE Ontario, so most of the deer we shoot are inside 100 yards and moving. One of my M305 shorty's with an Aimpoint T-1 was the perfect combination for me on Monday (opening day) when this fella tried to sneak out. This is the first deer I've ever shot with a non-magnified optic and I'm now a believer. Ammo was Winchester Super-X 150gr. PP

I also have been carrying this gun while dogging. Yeah its not a light gun, but I find it carries just fine and is handy in the brush.
