I know a lot of questions have been asked about this rifle. I have read some treads about it but I dont have much time for the computer. We just bought our first house this week and my wife is allowing me one last splurge. I don't have technical questions like most guys, I'm just a guy who can't afford a full price AR and want an honest opinion about the Norinco M4. A lot of you guys out there know your s**t and I'd love to hear from you.

  • Pros and cons of the Norc M4
  • Accurate or not
  • Is it worth it for the price?
I like basic guns (I shoot production), not fancy tricked out space guns. How is this rifle out of the box?

Well, I don't own one but I have handled one at a local gunshop and was impressed by feel and fit (finish was also OK but I have heard it comes off ). I have also fired one that belongs to a buddy and it worked flawlessly. In fact it felt, handled and shot just like my S+W M+P 15 for which I paid $1600+ whereas he paid something like $900 for his.

Generally, I hear that they are pretty good out of the box and people seem to think they are good value.

Another possible consideration is of course a CZ858 - same price range, cheap ammo and a very solid piece of kit.
 
a cheap AR is better than no AR :)

i bought one, i too like simple guns. i dont care how the finish is on it, as long as it fires.

id say it is worth it for the price, specially the 699 deal soon to be available.
 
Just bought one. It is the best deal for the price. You wont go wrong getting one. It is accurate. Finish is crappy but the rest of it is tip top. I wouldnt hesitate to buy a norinco product. You just have to know what to expect.
 
I rather suspect at some pojt, some industrious forum dealer (maybe NEA or Neit Arms?) will offer a bead blast and Type III hard anodizing service for these rifles.

The ones I've seen all had really crappy finish that flaked off and had a very poorly cast and finished selector, but were other wise solid pieces of kit.

Selectors are cheap and easy to replace and if the finish sucks, you can always paint it or get it refinished.

For the price, it's hard to beat as a starter AR.

Some guys buy them to get the upper and then swap out the lower for a brand name one with a new LPK. Might not be a bad route to go.
 
It will work fine as is.
Any criticisms have been minor.
Use the money you save to buy ammunition and range time.

Personally, I don't think that adding bells, whistles and bobble headed dolls to a Norinco makes sense, from the standpoint of resale value.
Only thing I would add is an optical sight. Not because there is anything wrong with what comes on the M4gery, but because I can shoot better with a scope than with irons.
 
After having owned one for a while:

Pros: Totally reliable, solid, takes all kinds of AR parts, as close as you'll get to a military AR (balance, weight etc) for less than a Grand, accurate enough (1.5-2 MOA depending on what you feed it - out to 300) cheap enough that if you scuff it going prone it doesn't make you cry, the instruction manual (who could hate a manual that offers you the opportunity to "enjoy a better annihilating firepower").

Cons: Made in China (for some), not real pretty, nobody mistakes you for KevinB when they see it's a Norc, expensive to feed (ammo shoots like a pistol, costs like a rifle - same for all semi auto rifles).

I've run mine on the Norc lower and on an Armalite lower, the Armalite lower is a bit tighter, if you're into that. When I bought mine, it was (at $875) cheaper than I could get a 14 1/2 inch upper to complete my Armalite lower - and still is. When Marstar lands these for $699, they'll be cheaper than some AR wannabe rimfires.
 
I bought my Norc last year and have about 500 rounds thru it. Not a single malfunction.

Pros: Affordable,Accurate with irons (tho I don't shoot much beyond 100 meters), and Reliable.

Cons: I personally don't have any. It was what I could afford to buy at the time and since my Norc T97 is in the ethers somewhere I'm happy with the M4gery.

I love mine. Personally I don't understand why so many people bash the finish on them. It's "BLACK", just how I want it. Do the more expensive ones come with a pretty sparkly black finish on them? Now before I get the whole board pissed off at me, I'm sure the more expensive ones have a great finish, but I could really care less. In fact, like others have said, I'd probably be to concerned with scuffing it if it's so perfect. The only thing regarding the finish that bothered me were the parts that had a black paint painted over the actual finish (carry handle, trigger) and it flaked off so easy to reveal the real finish which matches the rest of the rifle that it really wasn't a big deal. Now my only real complaint with mine was that the extendable stock was pretty tight out of the box. It's much better now and slides easily unless I have it fully retracted. So other than that, it works flawlessly and I have zero regrets.

I own one, and just got my M4gery going too...... And if you HAD to decide between one or the other I would first ask.... "Are you using this at a range only?"

Norc M14 is non-restriced..... take it anywhere......

But if your only taking it to a range where you can shoot restriced..... I would say get a cheap AR.

M14 is good, you would not have problems with it.


But you would get more enjoyment out of the AR, and save a couple bucks on ammo.
 
You won't see me bashing the finish on the one I've preordered from Marstar. I bought it because I plan to run ammo through it like crap without worrying and I plan to introduce my sons to fit/function/repair on it. It'll see alot of use/abuse before I bring out he safe queen for them to use.

Don't you EVER trash bobble headed dolls man!!! That and some multi coloured electricians tape and my Norc SKS can shoot the wings off a mosquito at 300, no, 3000 meters. Honest. With iron sights.

That's great to hear! Welcome to the Norinco M4 number club. I'm sure you will enjoy throwing boxes of rounds at it.

I was asking about the Norc M4 last year. Everyone said it shoots and functions good. So for an AR under $1k, why not? It doesn't look nearly as nice as my cousin's RRA AR-15 but it shoots and feels basically the same except that his is 16" and the M4 is 14".

Someone here said to me that the only person that will know it's a Norc will be you posing with it in your underwear in front of the mirror. lol

The finish is not so good and is rough around the edges but seriously, no one is going to know from 1 meter away. :)
