Guys i know this had probably been posted elsewhere, but im terrible when it comes to forums.. so excuse the noobidity ( real word ? ) and shower me with your knowledge.

im picking up an m305 or 2 from a buddy who imports. i would like 1 of the 2 to be a shorty ( 18 inch ).. for cool factor and so its easier to weild in the dense NZ scrub when shooting pigs goats and deer.

my question: Can the regular barrell be cut down ? if so what ramifications will that have with the gas system ? i know it will have adverse effects for accuracy ( we dont exactly have an available or easily attainable supply for short barrells here ) i do also want it to preform out to 250m +

my options ? and your thoughts ?

You definitely want to spend some time reading every sticky in this forum and lots of the posts. The short answer is "yes", the longer answers can be found within. No gas system ramifications at all, you will need a different flash hider (although there is also a pretty cool thread about how to turn your stock FH into a threaded FH for your new shorty barrel).

best to chop er off at 18 3/4 so yer smith has that 1/4 inch to work with...... the shortest you can go is 18.5 ..... minimum length for non restricted
the only two things of concern have nothing to do with the rifles function.... they are ... as mentioned above the flash hider..... can be reamed and tapped 1/2 x 28 tpi to match barrel..... misanthropist has a post about it ...... and the front sight needs to be replaced with an alternate such as a gas lock front sight...... unless you go with misanthropists norc F/H idea.

Does New Zealand have barrel restrictions?

My approach would be to head down to a machinist or gunsmith or whoever can do the work for you in NZ...have the barrel cut to 18" or so (assuming that's a legal length there which you would know more than me!) and then a shoulder machined on to the barrel that is 1/2" in diameter and threaded to 28 tpi...

Now go look up my thread called "ultimate front sight solution for the cost of a case of beer" and it will explain what to do with the flash hider and front sight assembly so you can use it on your shortened rifle.

No gas system mods are required for 18" and you bet it will perform at 250m...I shoot mine regularly at about twice that and they have all worked great so far!

"...No gas system ramifications at all..." Yep. The gas hole is farther back than 4". You will find the muzzle blast and noise is significantly greater though.

as far as barrell restrictions.. no .. but the weapon has to be longer than 760cm in shortest/fixed length to be legal.. otherwise its classed as a pistol in which case you need your pistol license.

what gets me about our laws.. suppressors are all legal all the time on any firearm, but a flash hider - completely illegal unless you're a military license holder ... make sense? not to me ( this is referring to semi automatics , single shot - bolt action - pump action are a different ball game )

i will be using misanthropist's F/H idea, i like it very much, will look neat in a sage stock and it'll be something different around here.. should stir up the locals.

one question i have about threading the barrell and the F/H .. getting the F/H to sit in the correct upright position.. is this something that is easy to do ( ive never cut a thread before ) .. is it something i should be able to just leave with my gunsmith and trust in his abilities ?

i will do soon, going to catalogue the build process so you can all see how real men do it . haha just kidding, ill take some pics as i remember to. its fitted with a custom overbarrell suppressor at the moment until i can get hold of a nice FH for the cut down.
plan is to have it milspec coated in a custom urban camo pattern ( thats going to be the hard part )

so i will definately take many a photo when its done

I've corresponded with a Kiwi about gas shims. He would have been very happy to get a couple of shim stock washers in the mail, but he was quite concerned about NZ's military firearms' import rules. Even importing a single part was forbidden, or very cumbersome for the paperwork.

(BTW, I think the rage about SAGE stocks
is just a passing phase.
