Norenco M93 question

Hi All,

I have my newly purchased M93 out today to do a first time clean up.... I'm no gunsmith and have it broken down with handles off, back strap removed, slide housing (heard nightmares and am not f'ing with that spring), and sear spring....

My buddy who had purchased told me to buy mineral spirits and soak... but that #### looks pretty nasty...
What do I do with the chemical waste after??? Is the pistol broken down enough for a soak?? Is this the right way to clean a brand (50 year old) new one??

Advise greatly appreciated, I'm pretty sure there were a few sold out there and would love some best practices ...
 
Not sure if it's cosmoline. But if you are not familiar with the complete dis-assembly, your best option is a brake cleaner spray. You don't mess around with those small parts and ending up with an expensive paper weight. With a mineral spirit soak, your contaminated liquid needs to be disposed properly. But with a brake cleaner, it evaporates with very little residue you can catch with shop towels. You might need more than a can depending on how bad it is covered. After brake cleaner, lubricate every sliding part, linkages, springs and make sure barrel is dry before going to range. I clean barrel with bore cleaner and make it a point to run patches until I get a clean run. An M93 is an M93 regardless if its new, a chinese clone or an older model. Good luck!
 
I'm thinking of going brake cleaner because of the nastiness of the mineral spirits... I don't want to use that evil toxic stuff... Have no clue what to do with the waste and hate the idea of it...thanks for the advise I was hoping brake cleaner was enough... not cosmo but some other nasty treatment
 
I would do mineral spirits because brake cleaner will strip away everything leaving no rust protection in places where you might not be able to get oil in again.

Or brake cleaner follow by mineral spirits and then a spray on gun oil everywhere you can get it, followed by lots of wiping and even blowing off with compressed air if you have a way of doing that.

Taking it apart and cleaning every little piece is better, but this is a tricky one so I don't blame you for not wanting to.

Mineral spirits can be disposed of anywhere you can dispose of old paint. Ask at the store where you buy the mineral spirits.
 
Okay so brake cleaner worked okay with one exception it ate my grips.... I'm an idiot... but at least it was a Norenco and not a Kimber....
Thought they were metal, as it turns out soap and water for the grips would be my advise.... please sticky for comedy value...

Sorry man. Been watching this thread and thought brake cleaner and grip removal was kind of obvious!

For cosmoline, I use break cleaner and/or gasoline. If in a real bind, PM me, I may be able to help.

Bummer dude. You're not the first to partially dissolve their grips with brake cleaner, if that's any consolation. And be sure to keep that shiite away from your magazine followers as well (the other plastic part on your m93).

For the record, just because brake cleaner "disposes of itself", it does not mean it is not nasty stuff. Bad for all things living, even after it has evaporated. Mineral spirits all the way, IMO.

that is why I did not mention removing the grips. My apology for something like an incomplete suggestion. I hope you can refinish the grips.

No worries...

My buds and I are howling about it now.... The grips were off the gun but I let them sit too long in a pool of brake cleaner...Like I said "I'm an idiot"...The grips are salvageable although I have painted them white.... some sixteen year old would love it now... :D ...
I was gonna get some wood grips anyways....
