So im looking at getting a first hand gun again. Had one 18 years ago.
Im partial to the 1911 but have a limited budget so norinco is it i guess.
I wish i could get one in .40.
Is there any real practical/functional difference between the 9mm & 45?
Also i dont have a compact model to compare to, are they scaled down or what?

Thanks.

I would go with the 9MM just from a practical sense the ammo is readily available and cheaper.

The guns other than the barrel differences should be exactly the same size.

The compacts usually are just shorter in the barrel over the full size.

Norinco owners may chime in here to fill the gap.

I saw the Sam's but not for that low of a price. I reload for .40 so it makes better sense to me to get one in that cal.
For the $100 difference i might look closer at the sams.

The cost of ammo is usually many times more the cost of the gun.. I'd get a better gun in that case

If you're reloading .40 already and you're on a budget then stick with a 9mm and buy a set of 9mm dies if you don't have them already. And since you reload already you already know how to add up the cost of the supplies. I find that it's something like 7 to 8 cents a round more for .45acp over 9mm. If that's enough to matter than stick with 9 or buy the SAM and just load more .40S&W.

The Commander length guns are simply shorter. Same frame height, width and most of the parts. Just the barrel, slide and frame are shorter. So it uses the same magazines and other internals other than the recoil spring and guide.

Norinco 1911 ..... 9mm or .45ACP?

Go 9mm if you aren't reloading it.

Go .45ACP if you are reloading it or are going to be in the near future.

Whichever caliber you choose, field strip that pistol in the store before you buy it. My friend recently bought a Norc 1911 and the slide pin had to be punched out. The factory presses them in mechanically, and mangles some of them in the process. $50 into it before he even fired it:(
