Norinco 1911 bad magazines - no warranty?

Hi guys,

I've got a 1911 and both magazines that came with the firearm are defective. They get stuck in the magazine well and don't lock the slide after the last shot.
I've got one replaced by the warranty center but they say now the magazines are not covered by the warranty and I have to buy a new one.

What can I do? Anyone else with the same issue?

Thank you!

I had the same issue; it is not the mags; aftermarket mags had the same issues, as did they for some other members here and on the other forum. The issue is that the slide release is too short to engage either the Norinco mags or aftermarket mags. I solved the problem by tig welding the slide release to build it up, then hand working it. I verifying that it engages the mag follower without interference. Once I'm happy with the fit, I reblue.

I have done this for a number of other members and all have been very happy with the fix. I do the work for the cost of return shipping the mag release. I don't need the whole pistol as I have a pistol here to use for fitting.

If you are interested, send me a message.

Mark

This. 100% the problem and solution.

Or you can just buy a new slide stop (I went with Ed Brown)

Thank you all for your replies and the solution to fix the problem. The magazine that was replaced works just fine. The second that came with the gun worked for a while but now it started to act up.
I was more interested to find how can I get it fixed under warranty. I don't think I should be denied warranty for a magazine that came defective from the factory.
Thoughts?

Post some pics of the mag that doesn't work. More specifically the follower and the mag catch notch.

Substandard OEM magazines are par for the course with mass-produced 1911s. Chip Mccormick, Tripp, and Wilson Combat all make good magazines.

it's the Norinco slide stop. It's not the greatest. Norincos are cheap for a reason. I suggest trying an aftermarket slide stop. Brownells has one for $50 or so.

Meroh is correct. I had 5 magazines, 2 Norinco, 2 Mecgar, and one Wilson combat all with the same issues as you describe. All magazines were completely hit and miss as far as not locking after the final shot (no pun intended) and I could not make any sense of the issue at all. He offered to fix the issue for me and could not be happier. Slide locks SOLID on all 5 now, like a Swiss watchmaker had worked on them. He knows his stuff and he is a very decent and honourable man. He will not steer you wrong.

Or as stated earlier, you can buy and install another slide stop, but I found that is the solution to this issue with the Norinco 1911's.

Hi Mickey, thanks for the endorsement! Glad to hear again that your gun is working well!

For those who don't know me, I am a process engineer with a lot of tool and die experience, and have been doing basic amateur gunsmithing for about 40 years. I also have about 40 years welding experience, and have a basic Tig set-up at home. For me, this repair takes me less than 20 minutes, and like Mickey's and others, my pistol (running Norinco and Remington mags) never misses a beat now. Regardless of what some here say, these are great guns, well made and accurate (even if a bit rough around the edges) and are made to shoot. I like promoting the sport, and one way that I do this is to help others keep shooting!

BTW, I believe that this is the reason that I got such a great deal on my pistol. It was lightly used, and still had some Norinco brown grease in it in places. After posting here, I bought into the mags being the issue, and I bought two Remington 1911 mags and the condition did not improve. BTW, the Remington nickle plated mags are great value at < $30.00 and are a smooth and slick as they come!
