I am told the silver finish on the frame is "hard chrome". I cannot confirm if it really is hard chrome or something similar.
You might be able to have it rechromed. It shouldn't be too expensive, assuming you can find a local shop to do it (doing gun parts sometimes makes people nervous). I had a whole bunch of gun parts done (not a serialized receiver though) and the shop only charged me the minimum shop fee of $50. That worked out to about $3 per part. In order to rechrome it though, they would have to strip it. I don't know if that would be mechanically (sandblasting) or chemically (acid). They might be able to chrome over the existing coating, but I doubt it.
