My 1911 norinco had a crash at the range today. When I fired a round it failed to eject and now is locked up tight. The slide is back about 4 mm and won't move more than about 2mm in either direction, and also the barrel bushing is split. If I could get it apart I could likely find whats wrong but it won't budge and I'm not about to force it, any suggestions?

same thing happened to me on a norinco commander but my bushing was fine. in my case, the barrel link broke and the slide locked up tight. i think the only way to get it open is to stick a punch down the barrel and beat on the breechface until the slide opens. i would wrap the punch in elecrtical tape though so you don't mess up the barrel
I had this problem after my barrel bushing failed on my 1911C (aftermarket bushing with much tighter clearances than the stock one).
I used a cleaning rod to push on the stuck case by pressing it down onto a bench. I also pushed on the chamber end of the barrel inward to free it up.
Turned out that the aftermarket bushing which clearly stated on the package "for commander sized 1911's" was too long and contacted the barrel slighlty when the slide was retracted. After a few rounds it failed and sent my recoil spring and plug downrange. I never did find the plug. Since then I put it back to stock and it's worked fine.

Thanks for the help guys, it turns out my barrel was bulged just back from the muzzle,not sure why, but that's why it wouldn't open. I had to cut the slide stop to get it apart. Now I need a slide stop, barrel and bushing. There was no obstruction that I know of, any theories as to why it may have bulged the barrel?

I'm just thankful that there is no personal injury. Barrel, bushing, and slide stop are easily replaced. Gunnar at www.armco.com (or something like that) is a board sponsor, but also a very busy gunsmith and shooter. I've had all my serious 1911 work done by him. Mind you sometimes, it might take a little longer, but the job is done right.

Squib
Almost without any doubt a "Squib" - a bullet that had no (or little) powder behind it and was pushed halfway down the barrel. When you hear a funny "Pop" instead of a "Bang", please do not rack the slide and shoot another one!! This can destroy the top end of the gun - bulged or split barrels, slides, etc. I make and sell "Squib rods" made for tapping these bullets out...
BTW, if it happens to you, I can usually get the barrel out without wrecking the slide
