Hello,

I've been thinking about upgrading the grip safety on a Norinco 1911A1 to a drop-in beavertail grip safety. The problem is that the tang profile on the Norinco frame does not seem to be standard?!? ... huh?  Drop-in beavertail safeties, e.g. Wilson Combat, sold at my local store will fit 9 out of 10 1911 guns in the store but not the Norinco frame .

A closer look revealed that the curvature of the grip safety area (where the creese of your hand goes) is different than the curvature of the drop in safety. The Norinco frame is cut more in this area as well.

So what now? Is there a decent beavertail safety that will fit the Norinco frame or does the frame have to be machined and re-profiled in the tang area (to fit the beavertail safeties on the market) or should I use a beavertail grip safety that requires extensive fitting?

Thanks,

The only ones worth having are the ones that need fitting. IMO.

The drop in ones look crappy and aren't much benefit as you don't get any higher a grip with them.

Go for a fit one.

I'm with Rapt, get one that needs fitting. And besides, it's not like the fitting is going to remove much metal, it you are careful you can do it yourself with a couple of files. some wet-or-dry some cold-blue and a couple of evenings.

Get a fitted one and if you want it to look real good, get a smith to install it for $40 or whatever - it will look factory.
