Just received my approval from CFO (Ontario) this morning! I had to apply for "Collector Status," which was also approved.

I just love getting things (except bills, LOL) in the mail! Hopefully CanAm has the transfer reference number now, and I can

anticipate an email stating the order has been shipped! WooHoo!

Got mine yesterday, ordered on the 28th of April. Thought about calling a few times and finding out what was going on, but decided to be patient. I haven't shot it yet, but couldn't be happier with the purchase. The canpar delivery guy was funny. He's like "I've dropped a bunch of these off today must have been a good deal" he thought that the large box was an amplifier and told me how he had to bring one to an apartment building on a high floor and had to lug it all the way up there to find out the person wasn't home. Lol

Why if I may ask? Just because you are not currently a member of a club maybe? (don't know if you are or not, just surmising). It was my understanding that although they (CFC/CFO) might ask about club membership it is not necessary especially if you already own restricted/prohibited. I'm very interested in this as I ordered two and I haven't been active in the sport for about 30 years and am not a member anywhere. However, a local range has "day passes" (do not need a membership) and I spoke with my local CFO directly before ordering. If they throw this in my face now I'm going to be pissed. I don't want collector status if I can help it.
 
FYI

We just spoke with the CFC in Miramichi.

They currently have 3 people entering the 1911 transfers in to the system, and it takes them 3-4 days to do each spreadsheet.

They are currently working on the spreadsheet we submitted a few days ago, there are at least 2 more after that

This is Miramichi, so it goes to the CFOs after they have enter the data.

I believe you hit the nail on the head. I too have been inactive in the shooting sports for a long time, but always kept my PAL (originally FAC) current. I, too, thought that since my original restricted purchases (back in the 1970s!) had the statement "BONA FIDE COLLECTOR" on them that I was, in fact, recognized as a "collector." Apparently NEW laws went into place as of Dec. 1, 1998. (This is my first restricted/prohibited purchase in a LONG time!) After I contacted CFC in New Brunswick, they transferred my call to Ontario CFO, who were too busy at the time to answer. CFC did say that they had sent me out a "Collector's Package" and wondered why I hadn't received it. (Got it today! LOL!)

So the lady at Ontario CFO got back to me on Monday, and was very understanding and pleasant to deal with. She sent me an electronic copy of the "Collector's Package," which I filled out and submitted to the Ontario CFO. Today (only two days later!) I received an email from CFO stating that both my collector status AND transfer were approved, and that CanadaAmmo had been emailed a copy.

I am not currently a member of any shooting club, but I am "shopping around" for a good one within a reasonable driving distance. (Newmarket) There's NO WAY I will let either of these beauties (assuming they are of the quality that I've seen on here so far) languish in the safe, only to be shown on special occasions!!

I don't believe that "Collector Status" is anything to shy away from, be embarrassed about, or cause any worry. It's The Government we're dealing with here - we have to cross all our "Is" and dot our "Ts" LOL


Can anyone recommend a good (reasonably priced) shooting range within a reasonable driving distance from Newmarket, Ontario?

Check out post #6 in the thread "Question about having your home searched..." , apparently having collector status gives the police (maybe just CFO) an extra edge, still not really sure on the depth of any extra edge. I'm not really concerned but I don't want to accept this designation if not necessary. I may have to end up doing this just to get the approval done, but like I said in my earlier post, I spoke with the local CFO on the phone about my not being a current member anywhere and he was indifferent about it being a barrier. My first order is with the CFC/CFO right now so I'm waiting to see what happens. If they just mail me a form to apply for collector status, I'll phone or visit him and try to say no thanks if I can.

Re a club : I'm trying to look around myself, hopefully within an hours drive and not with excessive membership dues, so I expect to have to look a distance from Aurora/Stouffville/Newmarket area as they charge heavy.
 
They can't search your home. Only the inspector can look at your paperwork or collection with notice. I have owned 12.3 and 12.6 firearms for many years and have never had an inspection. I have never belonged to a club until this year and never had any problems purchasing any fireearms until I bought the 1911 package. Had to get my collectors status confirmed and now is all good to go.

Yes, what he ^^^ said. They (the CFO) can book an appointment for an inspection, but they also have the same requirements for a PAL. )Knock on wood) I've never been visited, but always store my firearms in a safe manner. (In a Safe, in a closet, in a locked room.) Ammunition is usually in the garage or basement, also locked. The government is simply trying to cover all bases, I guess. So it's not really an issue.

And to Canthitathing, I have heard that the Orillia Gun Club has reasonable fees, and I may investigate that one, but it is a bit of a drive for me. Target Sports Canada in Gormley is a possible option, but they seem to be expensive.

I'm leaning toward the Orillia club, because they have Cowboy Action Shooting, which I'm also interested in.


Unless anyone has any other suggestions....!!

KarlB, Barrie GC seems to have a real nice facility with a lot of different shooting disciplines including archery. I'm a bit on the other side of Lake Simcoe so not the greatest for me but should be OK from Newmarket. I too am intrigued by the action shooting activities.
 
My combo arrived today. I live in Whitehorse, Yukon so Canpar passed the shipment onto Canada Post. Shipping took 5 business days. My order was placed on April 27th.

As for the pistol, she looks great. I will post some pictures after work.

I see that the Orillia Gun Club is "at capacity" and not accepting new applications at this time. The Barrie club looks like an option, but they seem a bit pricey for the amount of shooting I'll actually be doing!
