Norinco 1911 Government - Thoughts? Concerns?

After the holidays I am looking to make the jump and get my first restricted firearm. For the first one I want something that shoots well and isn't too expensive. Does anyone have any experience with the Norinco 1911 Government model? I have read many positive reviews on the firearm. It appears that the gun has been improved to much better fit and finish compared to older models. If anyone has any experience with them please share it. Also, are magazines easy to find for it? I am not sure if it requires a special 1911 magazine or not.

Over the years I have had a number of Norinco 1911's. Here are my thoughts on them.
Very good steel.
All the holes are in the correct places.
Grip screws are the standard threading as other makes but the grip screw bushing has a metric threading in the frame.
Fit & finish are usually fair to good. Luck of the draw.
Same for the trigger pulls.
The magazines are standard mags and other makes will work fine.
Internal parts on the gun are standard size which makes changing parts much easier.

If you are planning on getting a .45acp, the ammo can be expensive.
Other than that, they are a good way to get into pistols.
 
I found myself spending a lot of time with steel wool, emery cloth and oil to polish it up a bit.
Otherwise, good enough for some fun when money is tight. Always goes Bang for me.........

PROS
satisfied with my purchase, love canada ammo
fonctions flawlessly
its a 1911
price - 314$ at my door
lots of parts and info available

CONS
expensive to shoot
finish wasn't very good so i polished it a bit so i can re-blue eventually (should have sanded the tooling marks before polishing)
a bit rough, especially the trigger
sights are hard to replace (mine are non adjustable)


i know lately canam sold the government 1911 at 275$... i
check out the SAM at wolverine ... they have some interesting prices 375$ 1911

maybe the sport norinco or the chrome one at 350$ would be a better choice

its a nice 300$ gun that you wont regret buyiing it but its a bit rough and needs work
sometimes the extra 100$-150$ can be worth it if finish and smoothness is important

I've got one of the hard chrome commander Norincos. It's not a bad pistol, I can;t say it's ever malfunctioned on me although cheap mags do cause some issues in it. Now if I were to do it over again I'd but the SAM. From what I've seen those are very well made and lack the poor finishing of the Norinco. Heck for $375 for a SAM from wolverine with the novak style sights this should barely be a hard decision.
 
The thing that put me off SAM was all the really bad reviews in the US. (Sold as ATI i think down there). On the other hand, the americans love the norcs, and mine, while initially rough is now pretty much my favorite gun.

I've owned a few different Norc 1911's.... and still have a few.... Personally, I've never had a lemon yet.

My GI model [with real USGI replacement grips] before I changed the grips to double diamond hardwood & put in a S70 Colt trigger:

I've been trying to find a bad review..... Searched "ATI 1911 reviews " and the whole first 2 pages were all positive....

I did read one bad review but the dude sounded like a complete tard where he had to cut the rear sight out with a dremel to change it, and had a bushing stuck in the grip and didn't know how to get it apart.
 
My first restricted was the norc 1911, bought this spring. Only downside is the price of .45 ammo. Don't underestimate this. I could have bought a brand new glock 17, for what I've spent on .45 ammo this year alone (still can't hit the broad side of a barn. No kidding, I shoot better with my instinctive recurve) It's headed for "safe queendom" soon as I pick up a 9mm and .22 semi. in the new year..
 
same here... a 9mm or 22lr should have been my first gun
the .45 1911 was too tempting... but i realized fast 9mm and 22lr were better gun to learn shooting pistols
 
The Sport and Police models are well finished and quite accurate. I have given them trigger jobs and they are now very good shooters.

I recently bought a commercial Colt, and that has revealed how crude the Norinco is. That said, the Colt is only slightly more accurate.
