Hey guys so I got a 1911 around Christmas, and after removing the cosmoline then immediately oiling all parts rust is already showing. Has anyone had one refinished with a different finish such as armacoat and how has that finish held up? pics would be good too. Any other suggestions to deal with this problem?

I should add that parts had rust when it came out of the package, maybe the cosmoline wasnt liberal enough.

Try a very small amount of Flitz metal polish on a soft cloth - some of that "rust" is very likely to be crud. It's amazing how totally filthy these guns are out of the box, even cleaning with G96 doesn't get everything, also it's a very good idea to strip the gun down (assuming you can put it back together) and clean everything. Mine even had crud inside the magazine release. You might be shocked to see that what appears to be a dull 'matte' blueing is actually a decent polished blue. Don't over do the polishing though, you'll end up with no finish at all.

0000 steel wool and some good CLP, like break free.

Let the oil soak in for a few hours, then gently rub the rust off with the steel wool.

Ya I should clarify I did completely strip it when I got it removed the cosmoline then oiled all parts then put it back together, so if I use 0000 steel wool it wont remove the finish?

Won't even go anywhere near in harming the finish. If you start to push it hard, or go 000, you'll start to remove the finish very slightly.

The CLP between the firearm and the steel wool ensures you don't take off the finish. The only thing that comes off is rust.

I stripped mine and parkerized it. I like the matte finish. The only problem with parkerizing is you can't fix it if you scratch it

theres parts on the slide and a couple spots on the frame, also my ambi safety came rusted on one side it looked really rough, and also the spots where the slide rubs against the frame at the front of the frame, but it looks like thats a common problem.

I assume that since it was covered with cosmoline that you bought the
gun new from a dealer. If so then it should not be rusting this soon.
If you cannot get the " rust " off with fine steel wool then I would suggest
contacting the dealer.
Perhaps the gun was stored in an area subject to moisture or salt air .

I always do my initial cleaning with mineral spirits. Got another 1911 (Rock) a few weeks ago and didn't feel like going out to the cold garage to clean it. Went in the kitchen (wife out of town), grabbed a pot and clean the new pistol with Dawn liquid. Did great. Dried what I could and stood the slide on end over night and let any residual drip dry. Lubed and reassembled the following morning. since then I've done one additional detailed disassembly and two field strips. Haven't seen any rust.
