Norinco 1911 reliability report and some questions

Hey all, it seems people have stopped adding input to my thread. that's okay. I intend to follow up with all the details I have until this pistol works flawlessly for future reference for others.

I ordered a wilson combat slide release from brownells and it arrived today.

I put in all 4 mags that I have (2 norc 7 round and 2 Dlask 8 round) with the original slide release and cycled the pistol by hand a bunch of times. It was frequently failing to lock back with an empty mag. At least 50% now.

Then I installed the wilson combat slide release and cycled the slide until I got bored of playing with the pistol (like 15 minutes of just cycling the damn thing). I tried all 4 mags. Never once had the slide fail to lock back.

I think this was the culprit but I will follow up with a range report in the next few days when I have a chance to fire the pistol.

So, quick recap of the thread for those that dont like reading

Gov't style Dominion arms (norinco) 1911. The slide is failing to lock open after the last round frequently.
Many people suggest cleaning and oiling. I am former CAF, I keep my stuff clean, lol. This is not the problem
Others suggest mags, seems logical
Ordered and tried Dlask 8 round mags, no difference (actually seems worse, despite the mags being of incredible quality and design compared to the norinco ones)
Ordered a wilson combat slide release and installed. Slide has not failed to lock open since the install, no rounds fired yet though, will update soon.

With no mag inserted pull the slide back and lock it, shine a flashlight into the open action and then locate the portion of the slide stop that sticks out into the hole that the mag slides in...insert an empty mag and see if the lip of the mag catches on the slide stop and pushes it up.
It is a simple mechanism and if it doesn't work there is only one thing that can be wrong.
Some mags have tabs that can be bent out a bit to engage the slide stop.

skinny, thanks for the tip, but I tried this earlier. doing this as you described, the mag follower would happily just touch the bottom of the slide stop and sit there. It was only when the action was cycled with an empty mag that the follower would basically get stuck beside the slide stop instead of pushing it up. but the new slide stop fixed this.

so I finally got a chance to get to the range today and my norinco now works flawlessly. My wife and I ran about 150 rounds through it without a single issue. This is using either the new Dlask mags I got or the original Norinco mags.

So to sum up, a 30 dollar wilson combat slide stop is what fixed this issue. it dropped right in place of the old one and the pistol has run flawlessly since. Not a single failure to lock the slide back. Surprisingly I haven't gotten any random stovepipes either. but those were very infrequent before anyways and could have just been the pistol being worked in.

try Cabela's.ca for mags. They sell Sig 1911 mags (8 rounds) for $29 each and they work great. And if you run IDPA the gun still fits in the box with those installed.

Check your extractor tension, remove the extractor, firing pin etc. and make sure there is no oil/grit in there and take apart the magazine release and magazine release lock assembly, it's possible for grit to get in there and mess things up, by preventing the mag lock from completely locking on the mag body, allowing the mag to move under recoil.

thanks for the input. It is appreciated for sure. But the issue is now resolved as stated in the few posts before yours. I guess I'll try and update the first post just to help anyone else in the future with this issue

saskplcguy, no cabelas near by. I have heard they are building one in abbotsford though. My mother in law told me while we were driving around a roundabout and I almost lost control and killed us all I was so excited. lol.

Does anyone know if there are sig mags that fit the np29, if so what model? If not can anyone recommend after market mags? Part number?
