Several years ago I bought a NP28 9mm 1911 pistol. I don't shoot IPSC or anything and frankly rifles interest me more than pistols, but I wanted a cheap shooter and a 9mm to lend to guests. First thing I noticed was the wrap around grips, which must have been cut from a truck tire. And the trigger sucked. But the pistol shot well, and I replaced the grips with a set of Magpul at one point. But the handgun still had lots of sharp edges and was very chunky, so didn't feel that great to hold. I also hated the tiny fixed sights. And to top it off, the safety and slide release were had big extended flanges on them which drove me nuts. After seeing several very nice Norinco projects posted here, I thought I could tackle a bit of refining to mine. After all, it was only a $250 pistol and even if I messed up it would still go bang.

I a not a gunsmith and my metal working training was only highschool shop class, 30 years ago. So I really don't have much of a skill set to work with. I decided that I wanted bigger sights, no more sharp edges, better feel to the hand, remove the MADE IN CHINA lettering and I was going to do this as cheap as possible, because lets face it....I was still just polishing a turd. :)

Original pistol, bottom right. This pic is a few years old, the finish was much more worn before I started the project

Front sight was staked, but I decided to cut a dovetail and make a front dovetail sight. Triangular File has a "safe edge"

Filing out the relief to make it more comfortable. I just kept filing and holding it, checking to see what felt good

Filed the sights to point of impact, the brought them home and polished them up a bit. Now onto coating....

I was doing this on the cheap, so bought some Cerama Coat spray can/bake on stuff in olive drab and black

The sights are olive right now but I'm going to make them black.

The gun feels much better, I smoothed out the trigger channel and polished the trigger frame a bit so the trigger is a bit better. The sights are a bit unorthodox but it makes hitting with this pistol so much easier. Like it's a breeze now. I won't ever use this with a holster, so not worried about the sights catching.

No pics but I shaped the slide release and safety so it felt comfortable. Nothing fancy there

Only thing I would like to do is replace a couple of springs to try to lighten the trigger a bit more.

Cost of project was
Magpul grips -$30
Sight material $4
Coating- about $15 of the product. I still have plenty left.

The other Norinco upgrades on here that were done by skilled guys are WAAY better than mine, but I had fun, and the gun is much nicer to shoot.

Gates, where did you buy the bake on spray can coating, and how is this rig holding up so far to it?

I bought it at Nechako Outdoors in Vanderhoof. It's just a small spray can.

Seems to work pretty good.I've got 100 rounds through it so far. Although I would do a few things differently. Like read the directions better :)

They suggest that you don't do a highly polished smooth surface, and in my zeal to make everything nice and smooth, I guess I did that in some spots, despite knowing from past experience that paint likes something a bit more textured to hold onto. Like the grip safety, because I wanted it to feel good, and it chipped.

Frankly, after polishing it well, I should have just lightly gone over it with some coarser sandpaper and I'm sure it would adhere better.

I made a point of coating some internal bits like the slide stop pin, then scraping it with metal after baking, to see how tough it was. Scraping it with a screwdriver took it off. But that should scratch most blueing etc anyway.

I think if I did it again- with better prep work- it would be more durable. The parts that weren't highly polished seem to stand up fine though.

In summary, it is not as good as a good sandblasted, professionally coated finish, but it's also pretty cheap, and if I have to redo it in 3 years, it's a small job, and will cost another $15

One other thing that was weird today at the range (first time after the coating) ...It seems to now be spraying bullets laterally. Didn't do that when I was adjusting the sights "in the white"

I coated the barrel bushing, and the coating made it a VERY snug fit. I'm wondering if the coating inside the bushing-where the barrel contacts it- is now doing this? Maybe someone that knows more about pistols than I do can comment?

I have a hard time understanding what a lot of you see so bad in Norincos. As the op said-"I'm still polishing a turd, right?" There are many better firearms available, for a lot more money. If you want the latest and greatest, spend your money on something else. But if you want a gun that goes bang every time you pull the trigger, and if you want a gun that looks a lot better than you would expect for the money, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Norinco. I have a number of handguns and rifles that are Norincos, and I can't complain about any aspect of them. So, if you feel as though you want something to impress others, by all means buy something more expensive. But a Norinco will kill you just as dead as a Colt, Ruger, Remmington, Kimber or any other high priced firearm. I'm kind of sick of people bad mouthing a firearm that delivers way more in performance and looks than anything else in it's price range.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings. I own/have owned many Norinco/Chinese firearms. Some are great, some lousy, most pretty decent.

It's a $250 pistol. It goes bang. Compared to a $1400 1911 that needs no messing around with, it's a turd. Doesn't mean I don't like it. SOrry.

Sure as hell didn't hurt my feeling. Just stating a point.
