Norinco 1911, should I bother?

Norinco Fun

I'm a firm supporter of the Norinco culture even if I own and shoot Springfield Armory 1911's. :D

I've owned both .45 ACP and 9mm Norc's and I'm probably gonna grab another 9mm NP29 if Johnone at Marstar can get more of 'em in... That's beyond his control since he's dealing directly with the Kommunists. :p

Yeah, the machining is not like Brazilian Imbel machining or FN Browning HP interior finish, but the Kommies gotta cut corners somewhere... The metal heat treating is fabulous and that's where it counts. There were all kinds of sharp edges on my NP29, but a light stoning around the masking taped parts (protect from unwanted scratches in the bluing) and a touch up with Cold Blue and the problem was solved. I was totally stoked when I rec'd my NP29 from Marstar. This pistol had all kinds of cool upgrades, like a commander hammer, Beavertail safety, extended slide release... Okay, the sights did suck since they were on the low side, but they were sighted in at 25 meters and I won some matches at my gun club. Hey, my NP29 loved MecGar, Shooting Star, Pachmyer, Colt, and every single M1911 Single stack 9mm mag I inserted into the mag well. I was happier than a pig in slop.

Certainly we could debate whether the Kommies are ethical in copying said bangsticks, but honestly, that issue has been beat to death in this forum... without any productive resolution, I must add. Now back to buying the Norc's....

Having been a poor undergrad at the Univ of Alberta for 5 years, I will never forget the cost of studying yet maintaining a shooting hobby. I had to cut corners in order to feed myself, pay rent, books, and food. Somewhere in between I needed to hunt for whitetail deer and target shoot. In that context, I wholeheartedly recommend the Norinco 1911's to anyone who has to consider this price point. And that would be many , many of us CGNutters. :D

I do have to admit that there is nothing more satisfying than beating your buddies in a handgun contest shooting a Norc 1911. I just did this and I'll have to admit, that joy was overwhelming... more than the Demarol the ER had to shoot me up with when I dislocated my shoulder snowboarding. :p That's as much fun as one can have with their clothes on.

So back to the question.... to buy a Norc or not ? I ain't rich on a teacher's salary and a son applying to UBC, so I'm working a few extra shifts loading chairlift at Blue Mtn. so that I can grab my 3rd Norinco 1911. ;) I kinda regret selling the other 2 Norc's !!

25 years later, after having been a poor student, I'm back to pondering this Norinco price point and now I'm that much wiser (not necessarily richer or smarter), I'm happy to recommend anyone snag a Norc 1911.... dunno much about their other NP22X series or what have you, but I'm shopping for another NP29 once Johnone at www.marstar.ca gets 'em in stock.

Hope this helps,
Barney

Don't worry about that John. I will order a Norinco HG next week.

I have a few of the Norinco 1911, and a complete pair of pistols (done out with Chip McCormick parts and USGI bits and pieces) is still cheaper than a single US made 1911. I also doubt that there is a quality concern with the 1911. The 1911 boards (US) will praise the quality of the product while putting down its no-made in USA roots.

unless you have issues with the ethical way China operates ... buy made in USA. If not, you get a great deal with the Norincos IMHO.

I have four of them and they all shoot great. Not a moments worth of concern. Stock or buld 'um up you can't go wrong with the their 1911's. Guys who knock them frankly don't have a clue what they are talking about. My NP 29 will shoot all day against my STI trojan and cost 1/3 as much.

Great value for a great design.

I have a 45 and a 9mm. They are horribly machinrd. They look like they have 1 billion scratches. I think they are very good HG for the money. besides if you order it from Marstar you have 30 days to return it no questions asked.

Since reading this forum for the last few months, I have come across mostly positive reports on the Norc 1911's. I'm planning on getting one within the next couple of months or so, soon as funds permit.

Wonder down to the 1911forum. The Norks in the States almost have a cult following now since Clinton banned them. They are truly built like tanks and go bang with everything I have managed to feed them and very accurate out of the box. You won't be sorry.

I haven't seen one norinco product, ever, that didn't benefit from some sort or work. Not saying they won't function properly or won't shoot OK, but I'm fussy and the half dozen or so I've bought over the years, I had work done on them. The best built Nork I ever had was the CQ311 AR15 clone.....other than the ugly paint finish and gross furniture, it was a great gun.. Everything was tight, it was surprisingly accurate, functioned 100%. It got a paint job and A1 furniture, all it needed, and was pretty decent. The Nork 1911's all benefit from a properly fit bushing and a longer link pin, and the extractors generally need tuning. Triggers range from good to terrible but an easy fix for most gunsmiths. Sights leave alot to be desired......
I can't in good faith say they are "as good" as their competitors that cost twwice as much, but they are very good for the price and a few small mods will go a long way.

Hitzy

So what is your point? You pay $325 vs $1,050 and you are surprised you don't get a Mercedes? Sights are Mil-spec and if you want better ones buy 'um. These are target guns out of the box, they are what they are dependable shooters that function out of the box extremely well. There is not a MIM part in them and they certainly are put together as well as any basic Colt or Springfield base gun.

For an inexpensive entry level 1911 that you can compete with and enjoy they are great buys.

Sure buy one, for the price you can't go wrong. Even if you have to spen a few buck on it later on.

I picked up my 1911 norinco sight unseen from Marstar. I was worried at first but was pleasently suprised at the fit n' finish of the pistol.

It shoots straight, I'm a basic iron sights kinda guy and prefer the sights, my only complaint is the grips, which was easily remedied by Packmayer...

$325 brand new...

Bought a customized pistol from Nor1. Great guy to deal with, made me a real nice shooter :D. Just waiting to get my greedy little hands on it now so I can take it to the range! I have been stocking up on ammo from work (geeze .45 is costly!) getting ready for it!

For what it is worth a friend of mine had a norc 1911 quite a few years ago that he spent 200 bucks on and it shot damn near as well as my 1400$ para, all he did to it was put in a heavier spring. He was a newfie in alberta finishing his doctrate, when he got excited he still spoke newfinese even with all his edumacation....

I have 2 issues with those norc 1911. The rough looking finish and the sites. I can live with the finish but I really hate the sights. I wish they came with the M77b sights and finish. Otherwise no complaints. Shoots well and boy does it like to eat ammo like there is no tomorrow. I always find myself out of ammo after I take'em out. For the price they are a great training tool to get used to HG's.

I just finished fitting an oversized bushing to my NP29......what a difference.:) I always liked the way it looked, now I really like the way it shoots.

So the only real issue with the NP-30 is the mag availability?

Speaking of reliability, a friend of told that the Kimbers sold to civy’s as the Marinecorp spec model uses MIM parts, although the military version does not. He had a Kahar where the slide stop snapped cleanly in half, due to being a MIM part.

There is nothing wrong with todays MIM parts........
Norinco pistol mags are pretty poor quality. I wouldn't buy a nork pistol that only took nork mags.......
