After owning this 1911 for a few months now, I want to upgrade the sights. THe rear sight is a colt style dove tail, which i think should be fine. It should be easily changeable. The front sight however is the post style, and looks very painful to change, which is why im going to get a dove tail cut.
My question is, what cut should I get? I know there are a few, Novak and another popular one im forgetting the name of.

I talked to a local gun smith about getting the front sight cut for a dovetail and he said to buy the sights and they'll make it fit. So maybe the better question is, which sight should I go for the front and rear? The front could be anything, the rear being able to fit the colt 70 dovetail.
Will there be a problem with the sights if the rear is a colt, and the front is a novak cut? I would think it should be fine, but maybe not?
I hoping the sights will be around the $100 mark, but other then that I'm open to suggestions. I think anything with a very visible front sight (maybe fiber optic? They look kind of cheesy) would be best.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

The rear is a Colt dovetail.

For the front the smith can cut the dovetail to match the front sight. You can buy whatever front sight turns your crank. But the height has to match the rear sight. They come in different heights.

The existing front sight is a standard Colt Series 70 tenon sight. It has a tab on the bottom that fits a slot cut in the slide. The tab is then peened on the inside of the slide, so it won't fall out. You can buy a fibre optic sight with a Colt M70 tenon (known as the narrow tenon - M80 is wider).

This would be a much easier install than cutting a dovetail in a hard steel slide.

I have done some of the current crop of 1911s both ways.

thank you for posting. It was actually one of your previous posts that made me consider doing the dovetail cut. I was thinking of copying your sight setup exactly. would you recommend that setup, the $15 sarco sights?

thanks

Im looking at their site now, and I'm wondering if you could post the exact parts you bought. Theres a few variations like with the trigger.
What type of cut did you have to get for the front sight? sarco lists it as a "colt dovetail" im wondering what options does that give me in the future. Is it a common type like the Novak?
