I see Norinco steel cased (copper washed) ammo is low priced, anyone try it in their bolt gun or is it unreliable and/or not accurate? If not, what do you use? I'm not setup for reloading yet.

My VZ58 ate up the Norinco 7.62x39 I bought, no problem.

Oops, meant for this to go into the Hunting and Sporting Rifle section...

I've run quite a few of these rounds through various bolt guns and it goes bang every time.lol As for accuracy I've only used it to shoot 8x8 steel plates at various distances from 100 to about 400 yards and no issues with ringing the plates. As for tack driving on paper it might be another story. I think u know the answer though.

This subject comes up a few times a year - the consensus is that it isn't the best thing to run thru a target rifle barrel but, yes, it does go bang and is milsurp accurate

Milsurp Accurate means, not so accurate? I can still sight in my scope on my Rem 783 and I'm assuming I will get a reasonable grouping at 100yds if I buy this stuff?

Ask riflechair or look at his YouTube

This is what you are referring to:

Looks like it's decent for my use. I'm a beginner with a target type rifle and scope so if I lose an MOA or two I doubt I'd know the difference. I was thinking about cheaper ammo so I can throw a lot of lead down range for practice.

You said "Bolt Target Rifle".......So IMO No............Target/precision/Match grade barrels should not see steel cased surplus type ammuntion.
I would never, ever think of putting Norinco steel cases ammo through my match barrel.......

I meant to put this thread in the Hunting/Sporting Rifle section, my mistake (if Mods want to move it there), I'm sure I don't have a Match barrel. I just bought an entry level Rem 783 hunting/target rifle so this is why I'm asking. My buddy also bought a CZ Ranger and we were going to split on a 500rd tin to dial in our scopes and get used to the rifles.

So if you had this rifle, would you toss some Norinco in it? Any brass cased bulk .308 that would be better suited on a budget?

I still wouldn't run steel cased ammo in any rifle I owned.......unless I had an SKS.

One of my buddies used to get brass cased Hirtenburger 7.62 battle packs (240 rounds per pack) in 720 round cases. They used to go for around $500.00 last time I checked.

If you run brass cased ammunition at least you can save the cases for when you start reloading......

Shoots consistent 3" groups in my Zastava LKM70. At about 50 cents per round it's less costly than hand loads. The bullet can be replaced with a soft point for hunting and accuracy improves in my rifle.

Although not a high class target rifle, I shoot the stuff through an Israeli K98. Very nice to shoot and I can ring a gong at 100 yds. Of course, the gong is 6 feet in diameter... :p

I have a nearly new Model 14 Savage in .308 that will be getting some of this stuff through it if I don't sell it by Spring.

I attempted to use it in my 700 r5, however I found immediately it was 'tight'. I think there must be a larger overall diameter, or my 700 chamber is tight tolerances.

I essentially had to force my bolt forward (under my own strength) and it fired. It didn't feel right, and that is all I shot of the norinco out of my 700. Other .308 factory rounds I've bought and used chamber like butter.

Now I use the norc in my m305 and it seems good for that.

Just my 2 cents.

Depends on the rifle as well. The Norinco seems to have harder primers. I've had a lot of FTF due to light primer strikes. This does happen a lot more with the 5.56, but I've had a few with the 7.62 as well
