Norinco 45acp cheaper than reloading?

Another point to think about - I reload 9mm, and folks will tell you that there's no point in loading 9mm. What they are missing though is that if you shoot large volumes, even 9mm is cheaper to reload. Schedule your component purchases and you can shoot ridiculous volumes of 9mm for the same cost as a case a month. Once you're used to reloading you realize 1,000 rounds isn't really a lot of ammo.

Exactly, since I also cast for 9mm it costs about the same as .45 for me, bit cheaper on the lead side but powder and primers are the same cost.
 
Anyone have any trouble with their gun not wanting to load the swc bullets? I see some 155 gr at "the bullet barn" for 59$ per 500.
I don't want to buy 1000 and then hate them. They also have the 230 gr round nose bullets. Should I just stick with that?

Mine (norinco) had a failure to feed of maybe 1 in 15 shots using swc's. They were designed for round nose so I stick with that.
 
Once I started casting switch over to 357, 44 and 45. Diff is max ~10# lead, maybe 12 bucks per 1000 so don't bother shooting 9mm anymore.

45 was designed for round ball. Stick with round nose, esp. in lead, they load better. With big 45 holes don't need swc to see holes in the paper.

I like jacketed better than plated specially if your rifling is agressive, you'll have less chance of a jacket separation. The downside is jacketed will shoot dirty since the base is exposed.

My 45's see a steady diet of JSWC bullets. They cycle without issue and give a marked improvement in hit visibility by creating a clear punched 45 cal hole in the paper. Anyone who has actually used these bullets knows this. The trick, if you can call it that, is to not give in to intuition and seat these bullets deeper because of the stepped ogive. Seat em to spec. (about the same as round nose) and they'll slide into battery without issue.

Those prices are ridiculously expensive for lead bullets in my opinion.
I paid $137.00/1,000 for Zerp Brand Jacketed Hollow Points.
Lead is too smoky to shoot indoors and some ranges do not allow it.

Where are you located? Maybe someone knows of a good local retailer in your area.
The problem with bullets is that they are expensive to ship.

Both my Norks and my Taurus feed SWCs without issue except for one 195 grain style that I cannot get to feed reliably in any of them. These bullets seem to have a more squat profile and shorter nose than the usual style I get from my local pusher, and they were part of the shooting stuff of a guy who died and who's family was just selling off his things. I still have 1 or 2 hundred, but unless I can get them to work, I'll just use them as paper weights.

And, I have to add that I like shooting the SWCs as well because the holes are indeed easier to see.

i'll take those off your hands and see if my 1911s will feed them. all lead is great for me since I do 1/3 of my shooting indoors.

I only hoard 45acp small-primer stuff, so if I have any large-primer stuff I can swap that for the ready-to-shoot ammo. but I don't know anyone who knows someone who has even heard of Sudbury. :p
 
Ha ha! But just to make sure you know, in the event the planets align and a swap can be made, I'm still in possession of a hundred or two of the bullets themselves, I only have a partial box of roll your owns left that I was going to tinker with in regard to seating depth.

Ottawa?...I think I've heard of that place...:D
 
i'm probably too far away to make it worthwhile, in all actuality...

and this does remind me - I ought to put in an order for a few thousand cast projectiles with my source... hmm, 200gn ball or 230gn ball?
 
^Where would you order your reloading supplies from? I'm in North Bay, and have ordered before successfully with BudgetShooterSupply, but as with anywhere, shipping is always a killer, and there's nobody local that stocks the stuff. I'll be looking for everything to reload .45 acp minus the brass...
 
in my case (Ottawa), I drive 1hr to pick up powder but I do it 7-14 pounds at a time (though I may consider having it shipped next time), I drive 1hr in the opposite direction to pick up lead (usually 3,000 to 5,000 pcs at a time), and I just get CanAmmo or SFRC to ship me primers. driving 1hr sucks, but I only do it once a year so it's not THAT costly.
 
Might just have to make the trip down to Hummason, they seem to have pretty good pricing, and I can get my shotgun reloading stuff at the same time...
