Norinco 5.56 for SR?

I have Ben shooting a lot of Norinco 5.56 up to 200m with good succes and accuracy. Have any of you had good luck at Service Rifle matches with them? How did the do past 200m?

I shoot with a 20" barrel with 1in 8 rate.

This will be my first match, I just want to have fun and hit all my targets.

So who's tried them and how did it go?
 
What average moa are you getting with your ammo consistently?
If it is around 2 moa it is usable.
The lighter it is, e.g. 55gr, the more you will notice it gets blown around beyond 300m on a windy day.

It boils down to the questions, if:
(1) You are of a mentality that can have fun shooting a match and learning casually?
OR
(2) You can only have fun when you maximize your every chances of winning something? Doesn't mean you will win, it's a mindset perspective.

Since your mindset sounds like (1), 2moa ammo is perfectly fine.
People that do SR can fall into either category, they don't usually understand the other mindset.

The norinco 5.56 I have personally tried have regular 4 moa flyers, which at 500 translates to an approximate >20" which I would avoid, because it induces too much doubt. Doubt about gear and equipment is not a good think IMHO.

In short no. Better get a few boxes of well known factory American made ammo just for the match and Zero. Hornady match stuff is a good brand.

But 55grainers is not ideal past 300 meters.

Not saying it can't be done. But you might get unexplained missed that you where sure you where on target. ;)

If you can deal with that and have fun. Than it's all good. :)


Honestly. Get 3 boxes of good factory ammo and go shoot it. Start from there. You will see how it works for you. If you want more after that get more. haha

Someone tried shooting that ammo last year out of a 20" Colt and it was tumbling badly. At 300, the shooter was only getting 2 or 3 shots on paper and they were bullet shaped holes.

I remember looking at this target when the scorer called me over. My first thought "Norinco!". We've had it key holing at CQB ranges as well. (10-35 yd) Also split cases, bullets pushed into the case on chambering (very common), dinged primers but no bang... I got a couple dozen of those rounds at home in a box that I picked up at matches last summer. For what you pay I guess you can't complain and most of it goes bang but I'd never use it for anything serious.

I'd far rather shoot some cheapish US 55gr if that's what I was going to use. Bad ammo makes for a bad day.
 
I shot Norinco at a few service rifle matches last year. Norinco is hot ammo and I can see there being problems using a 1:7 twist barrel, but I use 1:9 twist and have no trouble stabilizing it. With the current ORA course of fire there is a fair volume of shooting at 100m and closer, so using match ammo at these distances is waste of money and reloading time in my opinion. I used Norinco at the 100m range and closer and I took home a medal from the close range phase nearly every competition I attended. Longer range I use 62 or 69gr projectiles.

I have had a few instances of bullets pushed into casings with Norinco. This is mostly with the LAR mags malfunctions. I think other ammo would just hang up in the same circumstances.
 
Not worried about key holing, I have a 1 in 8 and it seams to shoot fine with 55gr. I am not expecting to rival the top shooters, this will be my first time and I have never shoot my AR part 200m. I am looking to learn and enjoy. Fliers at 400m and 500m won't help me understand what I am doing. I'll keep the cheep ammo for 3gun and try something a bit better for SR.

If you are competing, better ammunition will earn you extra points, indifferent ammunition will cost you.
The Norinco ammunition that I have used is capable of 2 1/2 minutes when carefully fired prone @ 100m; fine for practice at the shorter ranges.
 
I think the Norinco stuff is great for training. I'll use it for practice a lot, but when it comes time to compete, I'll zero and run a practice session with my match ammo.
 
Lots of people test ammo at 100m. This is no indicator that it will work back to 500m.

I have seen MFS that shoots fine at 100m and 200m and was tumbling by 300m (sure sounded cool).

Yes pmc 62gr green tip I have tried were solid 2 moa, only tried 3000 rounds of it so not large enough sample base to know how bad can bad lots/batches potentially be. Only issue is supply is not always consistently available.
 
PMC green tip doesn't do well in my AR 20" 1 in 9. The PMC 55gr does a bit better at 100m and 200m. Guess I'll use those.
 
I strung 25rounds of Vs and 5s together last weekend from 500m using 62gr PRVI FMJs . I will still use match bullets for matches, but I don't think they give 3x the performance the cost would reflect.
 
Plenty of matches have been won using IVI issued ammo with a 62 gr bullet on it. You don't need 69/77 grainers to do well but they definitely squeeze out the odd extra point once in a while. The majority of SR is shot from 100-300m anyways and being a good positional shooter will gain you way more points than high speed bullets will.
