Finally got around to going to the range with the Norinco 780 Homeland Security.
Side Note: Ammunition used was Winchester Super Target 2-3/4" and Winchester Universal 2-3/4".
Impression going into testing: Not expecting much. Having read other reports and seen videos reporting massive failures, including but not limited FTFs and FTEs, I brought a small tool-kit to deal with minor issues, should they arise.
1st Test: 5 Rounds on Target to check patterning using Winchester Super Target, at 25 meters.
Outcome: Approximately a 3 foot spread at 25 meters. No FTE or FTF.
2nd Test: Sighting in the NcStar Red Dot mounted on the Mesa Tactical Shotgun Rail for Remington 870, using Winchester Super Target, at 15 meters.
Outcome: Took me about 3 shots to sight in the laster, as it wasn't off by much. Another 8 rounds for the red dot. Should've taken less- but that can be pegged by my own stupidity, when I realized I was trying to adjust the red dot, with the laser on.
3rd Test: Drill: 4 shots in the tube, none in the chamber, another 3 on my person. Start @ 5 meters from berm. Have a total of seven shots, including a reload to get back to the bench.
Outcome: FTE after firing 3 shots from the tube.
The fix?: The next round had come up to the chamber as well. Removed that shell by hand. Used a pair of tweezers to carefully remove the spend cartridge from the chamber.
Note: At this point, I used up the rest of the Wincteser Super Target on testing the firearm, to make sure it was functional before starting anymore drills/tests.
4th Test: 5 rounds on target, to check patterning at 25 meters, using Winchester Universal.
Outcome: Had difficulty sliding back the fore-end, due to the feed-ramp interferring with the follower on the last round. Approximately a 2-1/2 foot spread at 25 meters.
5th Test: 5 rounds from standing position, reload 4 rounds into the tube. 4 rounds from kneeling position, reload 4 rounds into the tube. 4 rounds from prone.
Outcome: One more FTE on the last round, and again the feed-ramp interfered with the follower.
6th Test: Drill: Same as 3rd Test.
Outcome: No FTEs nor FTFs.
7th Test: 5 rounds on target, to checking patterning at 15 meters, using Winchester Universal.
Outcome: Again, the feed ramp interferring with the follower on the last round. Approximately a 1 foot spread at 15 meters.
8th Test: 5 rounds on target, as fast as possible, relaod 4 rounds in the tube- 4 rounds on target.
Outcome: No FTEs or FTFs, but again, the same feed ramp issue on the last round. By this time- it's pissing me off to no end. Thank god I only had about another test's worth of shells left on me.
9th Test: Abuse test. Cleared the firearm, no rounds in chamber, nor in tube- safety on. Laid down in the snow, with the action open. There was light wet snow. Waited 5 minutes. (Used the 5 minutes to clean up my brass from the Savage and Glock) Grab the firearm, check down the barrel for obstructions- none, slid the action back and forth- all ok. Quiclky put a barrel mop through to clean up any excess water. 4 rounds in the tube, reload 4 into the tube.
Outcome: No FTEs, or FTFs.
Final Outcome: Aside from the few issues I had, seems to be solidly built. Full teardown afterwards.
After the teardown: Gummed up oil in the trigger group. Cleaned up and relubed. Found that the tube follower wasn't seating in the tube- it kept on pushing the follower out past further than its supposed to be.
Solution: Dismantled the tube- and trimmed about a 3/4" from the tube spring- just enough to relieve the pressure on the tube follower, but not enough to allow another full round to be loaded into the tube.
Final Impressions: Excellent gun for the money, although I would think twice before buying it again, and would not reccommend it to persons who are not capable/ willing to put some time and money into diagnoising and fixing potential problems. I apologize for lack of pictures as this time- the camera is currently dead. Need to recharge.
