I've begun looking for a Norinco 870 clone with a 14" barrel and am a little confused by all the different "names " they seem to be called. There's HP9, HP9-1, 780 - 14 Homeland Security, and N870. Are these all the same gun? If not, will Remington 870 parts fit them all? And for those of you who have one, are there any particular issues these guns tend to have, or any mods that you've found worked well?
Thanks.

Norinco's Grizzly and HP9 are the "good" 870 clones.

The Norinco Homeland security is supposedly a POS.

I wouldn't buy something that was just described as a "Norinco 870 clone". Get a confirmation on what it really is first.

Hp-9

i have an HP-9 with a 28 inch, and 20 inch slug barel, i use it for skeet and birding. well over 500 down the pipe and not a hitch

I have a Norinco 870 "clone" with an 18" barrel. I love it, have shot the hell out of it, upgraded the stock and forend, all the Remington stuff I have put to it have been direct bolt on. Great camp gun, never had a problem

"870 clone" a real 870 isn't that much more $$$, why cheap out and even have to think about problems. a real one will outlast us.

have an hp9 14".One of the first ones that sold here. Never a problem until i tried to change fore end, one of the op rods fell off. So I had to get it brazed back on. Heard another guy had the same problem and just replaced the whole assembly from and 870. either way its good shotgun for a good price. How much is the rem 870 with 14" barrel noway123? the new 870 are not as high Q as the old ones were...still better but by much.

I have an HP9-1 (14" barrel). I've had it three years. It's the first gun I ever bought, and one of only two that I own that I've bought new. I love it. No problems at all.

Actually I just finished tinkering with it. The action is rough to start, but pick up a $10 dremel kit from canadian tire and smooth it down. It's like glass now.

Pretty certain the Grizzly is NOT made by Norinco.

Pretty much made in the same factory. DA and Norinco are effectively arms exporting companies, not manufacturers per se.

For the Norinco, only the HP9-1 (14" barrel) is a proper 870 copy. The other HP-9s do not have the same barrel ring location.

The homeland security model is not even an 870 at all.

People say how great the HP9 and grizzly are, and in the next sentence talk about all the genuine 870 parts they put on them:p, kind of makes you think eh.:stirthepot2:

It's all about the shorter barrels and the magazines fed shotguns. Nobody would talk about HP9 and Grizzlys if they were plain 870 copies with 18.5 barrels.

How much does a Remington 870 with 14" barrel cost?

I have some new factory remington 870 police 14" barrles if i were to sell them i would ask $350-400ea for them.
They would be sold in a matter of hours, or sooner.

uh, the Grizzly is an improvement on the Express in almost every way.

sure i prefer picking up a used Wingmaster, but those dont come with 3" chambers and 12.5" barrels for $300.

I do believe you can get a gunsmith to lengthen chambers on 2 3/4" wingmasters. Mine's a 2 3/4" I've been thinking of looking into it, but I don't have the time or money at the moment.

the actual upgrade of the receiver to 3" costs ~$20 in parts.

im not sure id pay to have an old 2 3/4" barrel's chamber lengthened. i doubt itll ever be nearly as good as a new one, smithing will likely cost at least $100, and youll still be left with an old barrel with a fixed choke.

the average cost of a like-new 870 Express barrel with a 3" chamber is $150. much easier to just buy a barrel ready to go.

Thanks for all the feedback, I appreciate all your advice and expertise....it gives me confidence that if I want the 14" or 12.5" barrel, this is the way to go. I'd like to hear more as well about why the Homeland Security version is not well thought of.
Thanks

One last note about 14" barrels:

Getting accessories to fit can be very challenging at times. Flashlight forends extend past the muzzle, magazine extensions also. Sometimes there is no room for a bayonet lug, etc.

Something to consider. 18.5" is only a hand's width longer than the 14". Still short, but accessories fit much better (especially barrel accessories)

opps, didn't mean to tick anyone off. I have an old 870 Wingmaster with an 18.5" barrel - like it the way it is. Wouldn't even think about a 14 or 12". BARREL. Would rather get a pistol grip for this one, if I wanted shorter. Never had to change a part on it.
