Norinco 870 clones for hunting... not so much the 14" model

How would you guys rate the Norinco 870 clones as a kick around hunting gun? I'm considering one for the following reasons:

- they are damn cheap at $250-$300, and guaranteed
- weather resistant (synthetic, and parkerized finish)
- built tough (all steel, and synthetic)
- a finish I can redo if I choose to do so to rejuvenate it lol

I am just sick of paying lots of money for NICE guns, and then cringing at the thought of getting them dirty or scratched. This way I won't feel bad since it's cheap, but it's built tough. I do already have on of the old 30" Wingmasters, but the barrel is quite cumbersome, and I am told the the older barrels should not be used in high pressure applications (ie steel shot).

Also, for a general hunting gun, what barrel length would you recommend? I know I can just go buy another barrel, but I don't want to right now. I am kind of stuck between 18" and 24".

PS - Are the 870 clones improved cylinder or? I'm pretty sure the 14" is full bore, but not sure about the rest.

Thanks

Get one! But get the 14"...heres why: The 14" is the only model that will accept all 870 barrels (because of the mag tube length), and the 14" barrels are in demand. Get yourself the 14" model, then place it in the EE on a WTT add for a 18-24" with choke tubes, or just buy one and sell the 14"...it'll sell damn quick.

As far as 18-24? Depends completely on your application. Turkey, deer, decoys and a bit of pass shooting? 18". Lots of pass shooting with a little of the others? 24-26". I use a 22" for everything from turkey to trap.....a longer barrel would be nice for pass shooting, but I love how fast it handles.

HTH,

I feel stupid, but what's pass shooting.

I think if I did end up getting the 14", I would just keep the barrel... lol 14" is so cool...

So how would an 18" barrel be for trap?

My 18.5" Maverick worked fine for me for over a year of fun trap as it was all I had at the time, and I learned to use it.
Methinks what type of choke/pattern is more important.

I'm sure I'll use mine for birds this fall. I have the 14" barrel on my 870 and it'll be great in the boat this summer and in case the zombies come, and I'll try to find a choke tube 26 or 28" barrel for when the white geese re-invade. And a stick to put in the mag to choke it off to 2 rounds to keep it legal.
