What it needs is a goose neck type mount, that cantilevers out ahead of the charging handle.

Or they will figure out the same thing the guys with the M16 did, detachable carry handle.

I think somebody with time on his hands
can move that cocking handle on the side of the bolt carrier,
so a strong steel rail can be mounted on top of the receiver.
It shouldn't be that hard.
And since he's at it,
he should cut channels for the charging handle
in the plastic cover on both sides,
leaving provisions for left or right side options of the handle.

I don't think it would come too close to the face of the shooter.
Something like this.
