Norinco Coach Gun Question

Hi Guys,

Not sure if this belongs in the Hunting and Sporting section, as I don't hunt, but I just picked up a Norinco Coach Gun SxS and was wondering if the stock can legally be cut down to a pistol grip... Obviously not trying to create a prohibited weapon, I know it has to be 26'' overall length, but I also know that we have some funky laws up here in regards to modifying a guns length after it leaves the factory.

I know it's not practical to do, but seeing as this shotgun is purely for fun/range use with mostly target loads I think it would look cool without the stock. I am obviously not trying to break any laws though in this pursuit of coolness, has anyone done this or heard of it being done, or is it a complete no-no?

The guy at the store seemed to think it was illegal to do so, but I don't know if he has actually measured the gun or if he was just assuming that it would be too short. Would appreciate any clarification on this issue!

Thanks!

sounds like you answered your own question. if cutting the stock takes it under 26" OAL then its a no go.
whether that puts you in restricted or prohibited category can be a grey area

OK cool, so you're saying it's fine to modify the length of a firearm yourself if it is still has 26'' OAL? I just didn't know if it would of had to leave the factory that way or not...

Thanks!

Nevermind, finally found my tape measure... Thing is barely 26'' with the stock, definitely a no-go!

Being Canadian I have a very poor sense of feet and inches, better with the metric system lol

well it seems to be fine to modify within the min allowable OAL and barrel length, but the regulations are written very ambiguously (grey area).

some interpret them as "any modification" (cutting barrel, stock etc) is not legal, but as long as you keep to the limits, you should be good to go.

notice I dont want to definitely say "yes go for it" because in the end I am not a legal expert

You can modify the stock to reach the "prefect" length, however, chopping a barrel below a certain length is a no-go.

However, getting a barrel manufactured to a shorter length is A OK as long as OAL adheres to the existing law.

Ain't Canadian Gun Laws grand! ;)

bingo, i think thats about as straight forward as they get. if you want a pistol grip double mise well get a fullsize hammerless sxs, chop the barrel to 18.5" and the stock down to pistol grip size, just keep it over the 26" OAL. its actually tempting with the cheap guns that tradeex has forsale all the time, check their site, theyre in the top banner.
