I just got a norinco cq 311 and i wanted to replace the stock.
Is the buffer on the cq 311 mil spec or commercial?
I measured the buffer tube and it was 1.12,now i have read that mil spec will be 1.14 and commercial will be 1.17 so do i have to find a norinco only stock or will others fit?

As an aside, does anybody leave the furniture on CQ 311s? To me the only reason to own one of these guns is that they are a unique and collectible variant of the AR-15. To immediately tear off the no-longer available original furniture and replace it with run-of-the-mill, dime-a-dozen US M16A1 furniture is like buying a mint, OVS-stamped M95 Mauser and putting a Butler Creek stock on it (well, maybe not quite, but you get the idea).

If anybody is throwing away those parts, STOP and send them to me.
 
I've had a 311 for years and built and rebuilt it. I found them to be closer to spec than the Oly rifle I had.

Through the years I've tried a bout 15 different uppers on the 311 and all of them worked just fine.

The rear extension is around 1.12. I actually measured mine last night. I had a Magpul PRS installed on it, and though it was a little tight it went just fine, a little lube would help the instalation greatly.

I recently purchased a older CQ 311 20" type. I was wondering if regular furniture off a C7 hand guards will fit this rifle without any other modification? I noticed that the cap just to the rear of the front sight which the handguards fit into is different; the C7 is triangular and the furniture fits snuggly in and out of the cap, while the original CQ furniture is a circular.

If anyone can shed some light on this I'd appreciate it.

If you're talking about the 20" full size A2 type rifle (cq 311) the buffer tube/reciever extension is metric thread and can't be swapped for regular commercial or mil-spec tube to my knowledge. You can replace the fixed stock with an american style fixed stock if you retain the original tube.

If you mean the m4 profile cq 556 or whatever its called that is supposedly standard imperial threading with a commercial sized tube.

As far as the handguards on the 20" cq311 you either dremel the front of your new handguards or replace the handguard retention cap or whatever its called.

According to Magpul technical data you will be on the upper end of the milspec tube - but it should work.

The buffer tube (AKA receiver extension) is the tube at the back of the lower receiver that houses the recoil buffer (AKA recoil buffer) and the mainspring (AKA mainspring) - sorry, couldn't help myself on the AKA's.

Correct. One must leave the original metric receiver extension on.
