Norinco cq-a arrived today

damnit, this thread just convinced me of my next purchase... I really have to stop looking at CGN right after pay day :(

I've had my eye on this firearm for some time now. I need to wait until May to be able to pay for it and I want to buy a reloading press before. It's very hard to resist taking some of the deals on the EE... I hope I can find one in May.

here's mine

Looks just like what I've got in mind with the OD green MOE, except Im thinking NC Star quad rail and an AFG

Mine arrived today 2 days ahead of its scheduled delivery date.
I quickly disassembled it, cleaned and lubed it.
The trigger pull felt extremely gritty and the hammer sear surface had a raised rough ridge. I used some 2000 grit wet paper to polish the surfaces to a mirror finish. The trigger pull is now smooth as silk.
I then went to the range and fired off 40 rounds.
It functioned flawlessly even though I was using the factory mags.
I had mentioned to one of the pros at the club that I was purchasing a Norinco he showed me a first generation rifle and said that this is what I should expect it to look like.
When I showed it to him he couldn't believe how well the latest batch looked.
My best group of the day was 1" at 50m with open sights seated without using any kind of rest. Not bad for someone who has never fired a rifle before except for a friends 10/22 a couple of times.

My overall impression is that the CQ-A is a great rifle for someone who wants to join the sport withoutspending a boatload of cash.
I've ordered the YHM Diamond Series Specter Handguard so let the modding begin.

Yeah I would like either a Bushnell Facog or a Vortex Strikefire, but after that and the magpul furnature/sling plate/BAD lever/spare mags/reloading components, it would be too much.

I hope the iron sights are acceptable cause the optics are the last thing to be upgraded...

I also bought the same gun that started this thread. Had it delivered by mail beginning of Jan 2011.
With CQB grip up front and quad rail installed at store,

Free shipping, $905 tax in.
I am very happy with it so far. But then only 20 rounds of .223 so far out doors. But 3 months and about 3000 rounds of 22LR though the CMMG conversion kit.
As for the 22s, some days 1 in 10 jam and other days 1 in 5 jam.
When I took it to the outdoor range recently with the .223s it wouldn't throw the shells at 1st. I realized it was just tolerance and needed to get worked in. By the time I was finished the 20 rounds, it was working flawlessly.
But an hour north of Toronto it's still too cold to be outside for long. So I love the ability to shoot 22s.
I also picked up a 75 round drum for the 22s at Quastar but I can't get 5 rounds out without a jam.
And the 22s sure do get things dirty quick. Have to use the jacketed not lead tips or things get worse.
But overall, for the money, it was a great investment for fun. Thx to a wise old AL for recommending the savings of this gun so I could add to the collection.

Nice! I'm looking at getting one but I have to join a gun club first.

No you dont. Im in Vaughan as well (Ontario) You dont need to be a part of a gun club in to get a restricted. Have had many myself, and Im not part of one. Why wait, get one now!

On topic, congrats on the purchase!

Are you talking about Magpul Ranger Plates? Like the one shown here, but on a Lar-15 mag?

If so, they are available at a variety of places; I ordered mine (both for P-Mags and Lar-15 Mags) from Blaxsun here on CGN, great guy to deal with.

I was looking for the Tactipul baseplates....they are a large "D" loop. IIRC, the Magpul Ranger plates converted the LAR-15 10rnd mags into 9rnd mags because of the plate's upper intrusion into the magazine body. Have they been modified in the past couple of years to prevent this?
