Hi Guys,

Just recently got into the AR game with all the recent specials, and pulled the trigger on a CQ-A.

I must admit I know nothing about ARs, however did notice either the barrel or front sight block is wayyyyy crooked to one side.

It this a known issue with these? How easy would it be to fix?

Thanks
Eric

The front sight is secured by 2 pins that sit in cut outs in the bottom of the barrel. If those cut outs aren't straight across the bottom, the sight will sit crooked. Sorry to say it, but that's Norinco for you.

Known issue. It might work fine with the rear sight dialed way off to one side or the other. In this case, make sure that the gas tube is not crooked where it appears in the upper receiver, otherwise it may be damaged by the gas key on the bolt carrier. You can bend the gas tube inside the upper so that it aligns better with the gas key.

You might also be able to warranty it from the retailer, it's definitely worth asking about. If you're dealing with Marstar, that's definitely what I'd recommend, they've been very good about that in my experience.

If you want to DIY fix it, the easiest solution is to remove the carry handle / rear sight, and mount an optic on the upper receiver rail. Again, check for gas tube / gas key interference.

Alternately, you could cut off the front sight tower to give yourself a low-profile gas block (or buy and install one), install a free-float handguard, and stick a rail-mounted iron sight at the front of the handguard.

I had the same issue with an upper that I bought. I had to remove the taper pins (PITA), then I drilled and tapped the pin holes for set screws. That way you can adjust the front sight block perfectly. Failing a warranty claim, you can either do that or get a clamp on FSB with a rail and use a BUIS.

Thanks guys!

I never doubted Marstar's service but was wondering if this was a quick fix - which I expect I might run into on a 530$ AR. (for example: the safety when put on safe would catch so hard it wouldn't go to fire, filed down the "detent" and it's good to go)

From the feedback here, this isn't a quick fix, I've contacted Marstar and they've been very receptive so far.
