I dont know if it's the gun the hand guards or I'm just a moron but I bought some brownells skinny CAR 15 style skinny handguards to replace the OEM fat ones and I cant for the life of me figure out how to get them installed. Keeping in the theme of cheaping out I also bought a NC star hand guard removal tool which isn't much help. Come to think of it I cant also get the OEM hand guards back on either.

Any tricks to get these things installed.

I found the length of handguards on my old CQA were slightly longer and out of spec, and replacement handguards and to be trimmed a little and forced on before they'd fit.

Yeah, the delta ring can be a pita to hold back enough for the handguards to come off. Need four hands. The tool isn’t much help when it’s so tight. Shorter handguards help. You can shave a bit off the back end of the new ones to help get them on.

It's a struggle. Sand down the handguards a hair if you need to (the Chinese ones are a pain as is). Does the tool help replacing the original handguards? Mine helped a lot on the 14.5 norc

The handguard endcap could also be a little different than usgi as well. It's easy to file them down , reshape them a bit.

They are a bit fiddly. From what I've read about Norinco front sight/gas blocks the last thing you want to try is replacing the front cap. Most people loose the battle with the pins and cut the thing off, I think that fits quite firmly into last resort.

thanks everyone for the replies, so I got the norinco handguards back on, but the brownells are a no go even with the handguard tool. Holy shi'ite I hope this wasn't something they expected folks to do in the field. I'm going to try to sand down the brownells hand guard but I'm also concerned I'll make a mess of it. Other than this nonsense the gun shoots really well with all types of ammo and is surprisingly accurate. Not bad for $499

I really like Norinco firearms, at the price they sell for they are a great value, but I'm pretty sure there's some "old world craftsmanship" going into the assembly of these guns. Some fitting may be required using Norinco parts elsewhere, or using actual in spec parts on a Norinco.
