Been thinking up a solution to my problem- I wanna get rid of the flash hider entirely and really take advantage of the handiness of my 18.5"bbl.

I see on marstar that they were making norinco gas lock front sights at one point but Im not hopeful that I can track one down. I know that the SEI and other gas lock front sights arent compatible with the norinco gas system.

Either that or pick up a USGI gas assembly, yes? and then get a US parts compatible gas lock sight.

anybody got a bright idea?

Take a look at Dlask, They have a gas lock front sight as well and it will be i stock =) it is not the same but it will get er done !

To use a gas lock front sight on a chinese rifle, it must be threaded to fit the chinese barrel threads. Doesn't matter what cylinder is used.
Dlask makes the only one currently availlable for chinese barrels.

Check with skullboy, he had a few Rooster33 gas lock front sights in both threadings. I think he still has an add on the EE

Yip yaw- Xmas comes early thanks gents. its even on sale.

I wonder- if I take a shot at a deer in low light am I going to be blinded? Not that one should need more than one shot but in principle- what is the effect of that flash hider?

Bits of pieces has the front sight your looking for. Made in Canada... They fit the metric threads for the noinco.
Look under new products, I have one and its great.

I really like the look and cost of the gaslock sight from Bits of pieces. I wanted to get this kind of look with my rifle and really get it as short as I can. But I did not want to pay the money to have my barrel recrowned and for the gaslock. So I took a hack saw, a dremmel, file and some cold blue. Using my exsisting norc flash hider I hacked it short, removing the cage and only leaving 5 small points sticking out from the peice that mounts to the barrel (as I testament to the grade of this metal it took 2 saw blades to cut mine off. This stuff is hard!) Then I filed the points to be moderately sharp and blued it all up.

I decided the bayonet lug had to come off as well. But now coupled with a USGI front and rear iron and a shorty barrel this thing is short! With the front sight centered and the rear appature at its lowest setting it's sighted in perfectly for 300yards. If any ones interested ill post a picture of this set up later.

Removing the flash hider does not do anything to the crown .
If you cut the the barrel down then YES recrowning is recomend !!!
The dlask gas lock front sight and the gas lock wrench do not work together !! But once you get it on, you do not need to remove it to clean your gas system.
Just remove gas plug and slide the piston out clean and reinstall. That way your front sight does not even move.

As Chris mentioned your crown will be fine but, with a gaslock sight you will be stuck with the splines and threads still on the barrel which won't look horrible. But not the best finish look. Now if you put on a muzzle break and had the gas lock sight it might start looking like a FAL.

As requested here is what my back yard chop shop muzzle looks like.

thanks for clearing that up Chris Im all good then. Gonna be fun to play around with this in a warm basement rather do that than shoot in this weather

Thats a beauty there buzzballer- flash hider actually looks "perfessional" + prolly great for zombie cqb heheh. Throw an unwieldly scope mount on there + that camo= my shorty dream rifle.

Ill have to figure something out for those threads but thats part of the fun of it. I have a feeling itll be electrical tape for a while...

Thanks GN, it's amazing what you can do with a few shades of Krylon Mat spray paint. I really like the way the m14 handles being so short. I think iv changes the set up of my rifle about 5 times now. From irons to scopes to irons again. The electrical tape is a good idea for the short term. The fun thing with these rifles is you can play mix and match and change them time and time again.
